TASMANIAN police are tackling a "new generation" of street drugs, which are being made in a bid to circumvent existing laws.
Police said there had been a dramatic shift in the past year towards a new type of party drug with the street name of Israeli's.
The drugs are sold in capsule form and contain derivatives of methcathinone, a psychoative stimulant, the Department of Police and Emergency Management's annual report says.
The report says the drugs have been produced "in an attempt to circumvent existing legislation".
Southern Drug Investigation Services chief Ian Lindsay said police became aware of the drug and launched an operation earlier this year.
"We've seen a trend this year with a new type of party drug called Israeli's," Detective-Inspector Lindsay said yesterday.

A wide range of party drugs.
Look, I am NOT anti-Semitic in any way, the name Israelis happened to be a coincidence, to be used as the term of a party drug smuggled into Oz by Israeli drug lords to be consumed in rave parties.
Methcathinone
Methcathinone, known on the streets as “Cat,” is a structural analogue of methamphetamine and cathinone. Clandestinely manufactured, methcathinone is almost exclusively sold in the stable and highly water soluble hydrochloride salt form. It is most commonly snorted, although it can be taken orally by mixing it with a beverage or diluted in water and injected intravenously. Methcathinone has an abuse potential equivalent to methamphetamine and produces amphetamine-like activity. It was placed in Schedule I of the CSA in 1993.
In the mid-1950’s Parke Davis & Company, a U.S. drug making company, experimented with the drug. The aim of the studies was to see if there was a medical use for methcathinone.
They may have tested it as a weight loss drug and antidepressant. But methcathinone dangers were thought to outweigh its potential value in a clinical setting. Parke Davis quickly brought its research to an end and abandoned research with the drug.
In 1989 methcathinone made its recreational debut in the United States. At that time a University of Michigan student who was working at Parke Davis found a quantity of the drug and a copy of the manufacturing process. He decided to bring it home and undertake some study of the drug on his own.
The student and his friends seemed to like the effects of the drug and decided to share their love with the rest of the world. A year later they were synthesizing and selling their own version of the product. Use spread from Michigan to the rest of the States. By 1992, methcathinone was being sold everywhere. Methcathinone was classified as a schedule I controlled substance on May 1, 1992.
Synthesis of cat does not require complicated lab equipment to make. Ephedrine is often used to manufacture methcathinone. Because of this ephedrine sellers have to give the DEA buyers names and addresses. So, if you plan on buying ephedrine be prepared to furnish some form of identification before the supplier will sell to you.
Effects
Clandestinely manufactured, methcathinone is almost exclusively sold in the stable and highly water soluble hydrochloride salt form.
The effects of methcathinone intoxication are similar to those of produced by amphetamines, crack, and cocaine. These effects can include:
1.feelings of euphoria
2.increased alertness
3.increased heart rate
4.rapid breathing
5.dilated pupils
Similar to other stimulants, methcathinone can amplify the action of norepinephrine and dopamine. Unusual stimulation of these two neurotransmitters can cause strange behaviour in some individuals. Negative effects can include:
1.anxiety
2.convulsions
3.delusions
4.fever
5.hallucinations
6.headaches
7.insomnia
8.irregular heart rate
9.muscle twitching
10.paranoia
11.restlessness
12.tremors
Use Of Methcathinone
Methcathinone can be taken orally, smoked, injected, or snorted. The most common method being by nasal inhalation. The effects usually last from four to six hours. Tolerance and dependence can both develop quickly.
Street Names
The most common street name is Cat.
A while back I had a lingering cough from a cold. I went to Target to look for some daytime cough medicine, and found a generic version of Robitussin. I wanted something for a cough without antihistamine, analgesic, etc. The clerk scanned my driver's license when he rang it up.
When I got home, I did some research to see what the fuss was all about. It turns out that the main ingredient, dextromethorphan, becomes a dissociative drug in abusive doses, with effects similar to LSD!
The big thing to worry about is if this idiot that made it didn’t isolate the illicit drug and left any organic solvent or used a binder that isn’t exactly anatomically friendly.
The people that make this stuff use really sophisticated equipment; unfortunately, they have no idea about how dangerous organic chemistry can be nor do they know the techniques learned in OChem lab.
Even if they were to conform to some sort of ‘specification’ it gets cut down the line. Successive dealers add whatever the hell they want to it.
Israeli criminals have been up to their eyeballs in Ecstasy and other drugs including some Orthodox rabbis even.
DM abuse is really more like PCP or ketamine...Vitamin K in slang....than LSD.
one would have to drink around 40-50 times usual dose for effect of any degree depending on bodyweight
when i was a kid you could buy paregoric ...tincture of opium...(anhydrous morphine)..over the counter....they gave it to kids for tummy aches and tooth and ear stuff...licorice sweet dreams in a little cobalt blue bottle....great stuff....I remember it well
about 2mg per teaspoon which is about 1/10th of normal painkiller starting dose of Morphine
the good old days for parents...little Johnny would go right to bed..lol
then we got all civilized..sigh
We used to get Terpin Hydrate from sick bay, whoa,
knock you on your butt.
If I ever get pharmacudicals from my drug store with cute lil fishies/apples ect (as shown in your first post) I will make sure to ask my pharmacists if I am going to have an ectasy event if swallowed. : )
Completely untrue. You can notice the effects to a small degree at merely twice the proper dose. I found this out the hard way as I’m a rather forgetful sort on the best of days and positively airheaded when sick.
Well so um what you are saying is it is a drug made by Real Chemists?
I am not pro drug for fun but if some idiot is going to choose to get high better if it is made in a Real Lab and not the home brew poison.
The unkind part of me would like to say give all the speed freaks/tweekers a dose of Severe Graves disease for years on end and have them beg to come down.
/unkind part of me
mucinex with no added cough suppressant is your lung fossil clearing aid my FRiend.
Rumour has it that a fellow Stanford U student back in the 70s used to make pure crystal meth.
Well almost pure he used to piss in his batches as a joke before putting it on the black market.
according to all data I looked up ...yes...one can feel mild effects at 100 mg or so but the hallucinatory high this thread brought up initially and which I replied about is at 300-600 mg
the therapeutic dose is advised at 15-30 mg
I don't take it or any of the stimulant based congestion of cough stuff given cardiac arrhythmia
i take guafenisin for phlegm and narcotic cough syrup if it's really bad but that's been years.
if anyone wants to get high that bad just go to a shrink, spend 200 bucks to talk about how nervous you are and likely they will give you some benzodiazapine...I have never understood stuff like this or whiffers etc
amen...guafenisin (sic) is great stuff and virtually harmless even by the liter
it also helps make women more fertile...cuts down uterine acid and may make egg wall more permeable...
Guaifenisin is useful at the stage where you’re actually able to get crap out of your lungs by coughing, but not nearly so much when you’re just hacking and hacking and all it’s doing is hurting. I’m a lot more careful after that oopsie, in any case...
