The unannounced trip began around midnight and was expected to have the president back at the White House before dawn on Thursday.
...The White House kept Obama's plans off his schedule, informing a small group of traveling reporters in advance on condition of secrecy.
Obama was expected to observe a somber ceremony on the tarmac of the base without public comment.

Really? You must have mistaken this site for the Daily Kos. It's over to the left.
Stick to dancing.
Using your logic, the same thing could have been said about Dubya's actions/inaction prior to the surge.
Maybe, just maybe, going to Dover last night will impress on him that he can't vote "present" any longer.
He's the Commander-in-Chief, whether we like it or not. I can't stand Obama, but I'm not going to fault him in this instance.
Thank you, Exit, you truly understand what these ceremonies at Dover mean. I read your comment from last night and could not believe someone would have taken you to task for it.
What people tend to forget is the reasoning behind the original media blackout. It was not political ideology, as the leftist media would like folks to believe, but rather it was the utterly disrespectful behavior of the media itself that brought upon the blackout. Of course they will never admit to that fact, but I witnessed it first hand while I was a member of the media when the remains of the Marines from Beirut were brought home.
It is something I will never forget.
He’s so FOS, this was a publicity stunt.
Thanks, Gabz. It is nice “hearing” from you.
When we pass Dover AFB on Route 1, we often see the transport planes coming in from overseas for a landing. I often wonder if there are flag draped coffins aboard. It is a sobering thought.
The recent HBO movie “Taking Chance” with Kevin Bacon did an excellent job depicting what happens at the Dover mortuary.
Good to see another FR old-timer around. You take care.
Well, thank you!!! For some reason it seems our paths don’t cross to often here anymore, which is a shame!
Many folks think I’m a lunatic, but even after 6 years, I actually still miss the sound and sight of the C-5s coming in and going out of DAFB.
Living in one of the flight paths, and about 1 mile from the tarmac at the time, the airspace silence following 9/11 was eerie and freaky and the first airspace sounds were heartbreaking because I knew it was the first of the remains coming from the Pentagon.
I read about, but didn’t see “Taking Chance” but have a number of friends in Dover who are morticians/funeral directors who have first hand experience in the Dover mortuary and to a one they have nothing but good to say and utter respect for how things are handled there.
I’m hoping to be up in Dover the middle of next month for more than just a drive by, I’d sure love to get up with some Delaware FReepers as there are sure as heck a lot more of you now than when I first start FReeping from Dover :)
PghBaldy posted some photos of Hussein at Dover:
Lots of pics of Mullah Obama: http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/456/gallery/889680.html
Pgh, Thankyou for the linked photos.
I have a question for you and other Freepers (since we have many with military experience here).
Isn’t there something odd about how Hussein is standing in the right most photo on the third row.
He appears to be saluting with his right heel off the ground and his right leg bent. I’m sure that is not a military regulation salute.
Frankly, it looks like some flamer doing a campy sendup of a military salute.
Any comments, military freepers?
