Gloom Spreads on Economy, but GOP Doesn't Gain [D'Rats Preferred 46%-38% for Mid-Terms]

OCTOBER 28, 2009 Gloom Spreads on Economy, but GOP Doesn't Gain

JONATHAN WEISMAN Americans are growing increasingly pessimistic about the economy after a mild upswing of attitudes in September. But Republicans haven't been able to profit politically from the economic gloom, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.

The survey found a country in a decidedly negative mood, nearly a year after the election of President Barack Obama. For the first time during the Obama presidency, a majority of Americans sees the country as being on the wrong track.

Fifty-eight percent of those polled say the economic slide still has a ways to go, up from 52% in September and back to the level of pessimism expressed in July. Only 29% said the economy had "pretty much hit bottom," down from 35% last month.

But a dark national view of how everybody in Washington is conducting the public's business appears to be preventing Republicans from benefiting from concerns about the direction of the country or the Democrat-led government's handling of the economy, as the minority party often does.

In fact, disapproval of the Republican Party actually has ticked upward, along with the public's general pessimism. Asked which political party should control Congress after next year's midterm elections, Democrats now hold a clear edge over the GOP, 46% to 38%, a month after the Republicans were nearly as popular. In September, the Democratic edge was 43% to 40%.

"There was a bounce-back surge for Republicans, and that's stalled," said Bill McInturff, a Republican pollster who conducted the Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll with Democratic pollster Peter Hart.

"The mood in America may be blue, but attitudes toward Washington are just jet black," Mr. Hart said.

Rasmussen, which isn’t associated with NBC, says it is just the opposite. Guess who I believe?

Forget the polls. Forget “Republicans” just get out there and do what you know needs to be done and let the elections speak for themselves. Don’t get sidetracked, or intimidated by MSM polls. Do the hard spade work at Tea Parties. Purge the Party of RINOs. Just do it with single-mindedness!

Rasmussen is far more scientific.

Tuesday will be a signal of things for the mid-terms.

Republicans haven't been able to profit politically from the economic gloom, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll

When the same people who got the party into it's current mess still control the levers of power, why should the party be expected to profit?

That’s my view as well. The critical demographic that voted for 0 hasn’t moved.

67% of voters aged 18-29 voted for 0 and according to Gallup “WHITE, single, divorced, separated and widowed women” went “overwhelmingly” for 0

The Republican brand name is now poison. Nobody knows what it stands for any more. That is why a Conservative is thumping a Republican in NY-23.

Hey, let the NBC kooks run their own little circle jerk.

We cannot let them dictate the terms of the elections...

Not so sure about that. Look at how the GOP is backing a flaming liberal in a special election in a conservative district. Look at how the GOP backs liberal policies right and left, the bailouts and shamnesty being two of them.

A lot of people simply do not see the GOP as an alternative to the Democrat party because it is just Democrat-lite. Why bother with that?

Polls schmolls. The only ones that matter are the ones taken on election day. In 2010 if Republicans and Conservatives are all jazzed up and the economy is still in the dumps and BHO’s poll ratings are following suit, the Democrat turnout will be much lower than it was in 2008 and the GOP will make significant gains as the out party usually does in midterm elections. Polls don’t matter, elections do. Also it is more important to study past historical trends than to pay attention to a biased MSM sponsored poll.

“according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.”

And in other news: MSNBC trounces FOX in cable ratings.
