WASHINGTON Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the president of Afghanistan, gets regular payments from the CIA and has for much of the past eight years, the New York Times reported Tuesday.
The newspaper said that according to current and former American officials, the CIA pays Karzai for a variety of services, including helping to recruit an Afghan paramilitary force that operates at the CIAs direction in and around Kandahar.
The CIAs ties to Karzai, who is a suspected player in the countrys illegal opium trade, have created deep divisions within the Obama administration, the Times said.
Allegations that Karzai is involved in the drug trade have circulated in Kabul for months. He denies them.
The Times report came as U.S. deaths reached a single-month high in Afghanistan. Roadside bombs the biggest killer of U.S. soldiers claimed eight American lives Tuesday.
And on Monday, 14 Americans died in two helicopter crashes and brought the total number of U.S. service members killed during the month to at least 55.
just taking the focus off Obambi and the death of our military men and woman as Bambi fiddles.
Not that I don’t think it’s possible, but the NYT is hardly a reliable source.
From “Wire Reports”, did not know that was the Slimes...
Alinksi.....what is the worst thing to tie an afgan too?
CIA.
This is vietnam all over again.....they are working to dump karzai....
“just taking the focus off Obambi and the death of our military men and woman as Bambi fiddles.”
Exactly. He knows the NYT will always be there for him. More faithful than Bo.
I don’t quite see the problem. The CIA pays informers and agents all over the world, and it’s a good bet that the other side is also paying them in Afghanistan (the drug dealing Taliban need to keep government officials on their side).
This is an attempt to discredit Karzai (the president). The question is why Bambi hates him so much? Is his rival, Abdullah Abdullah, much more left-wing or more sympathetic to the Taliban/Al Qaeda? That’s usually the type of thing that would attract Obama. In any case, it’s clear that he’s trying to get Karzai out.
The article posted refers to the NYT more than once as the reporting entity.
You’re right.
Yep. Karzai is getting thrown under the bus.
Can’t take the word of nearly any news organization, really. Just have to wait and see if any more corroboration and/or opposing information shows up.
I don’t exactly trust the CIA either. : )
Thank you for your post, my thoughts and words exactly!
Opium makes for, what, 90% of Afghanistan’s GDP? Anyone with money or high up (no pun intended) is almost certain to be involved in the trade one way or another.
>>This is an attempt to discredit Karzai (the president
Bingo, they are really piling it on the Karzais.
Whatever the strategery, it’s been handled in such a manner - prolonged public discussions, backstabbing of friends and allies, the importation of Western standards onto a war ravaged tribal society, the public decrying of Karzai, I fear the worst outcome.
Imagine the ridicule to which Karzai’s brother would be held, not to mention their total loss of influence on their powerful tribe, if the clan was to distance itself from a primary source of money and patronage. In a market sense, they are just fulfilling the ferocious demand for their product prevalent in the West.
And if you wanna nail the Karzais, what about the Pakistani ISI heroin processing labs?
You will notice that A. Abdullah has not been particularly vociferous of late, IMO indicating that he did not envision what his questioning of the election results would have led to from the Obamawallahs.
That's possible. Or maybe James Carville told him just to lay low and let Obama and his goons handle it. After all, Bambi has fairly recent experience doing this in Kenya with his blood-thirsty cousin, Odinga.
Carville was contracted to help Ashraf Ghani, a talented financial technocrat and dark horse, whose only purpose IMO was to to act as a spoiler.
Carville may be advising Abdullah now, or always had been.
Keep wondering -
If Karzai has anything up his sleeve -
And will the runoff even happen -
