After the NV troops had been routed. The Democrats later stabbed the South Vietnamese in the back by withholding support.
Stanley Westmoreland McChystal
That is an unfair comparison-unfair to McChrystal.
Taliban killing UN types? Seems self-defeating, but what do I know...
You do realize, of course, that the "evil" Nixon's "Enemies List" was a list of political enemies that were not to be invited to White House events?
How scary was that?
Had a phone convo with my Intl Relations student daughter today and wanted to throw up each time she would mention Ahfghoniston and POhkiston.
bump
Is that how she pronounced them...like 0bamamy?
UPDATE:

Wednesday, 28 Oct, 2009

SNIPPET: “KABUL: Taliban suicide gunmen stormed a UN hostel in central Kabul Wednesday, killing at least six foreigners in an assault that the militants warned marked a bloody countdown to new Afghan elections.”
SNIPPET: “Three suicide bombers have been killed during the police operation, they were armed suicide bombers, Afghan interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said.
Unfortunately six foreigners have been killed, five foreigners have been wounded, he told AFP, without giving further details.
United Nations spokesman Aleem Siddique confirmed earlier that three UN staff members staying at the Bachter Guesthouse were killed.
One police officer and one intelligence officer had also been killed, an Afghan soldier at the site of the attack said, adding that four men and one woman were among the dead.”
SNIPPET: “One policeman on the ground, who did not give his name, said there had been a huge blast inside the guesthouse.”
SNIPPET: “We claim responsibility, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed told AFP by telephone. This is the first step, as we have warned that we will disrupt the second round of the elections.
Speaking from an undisclosed location, he said three militants wearing suicide vests packed with explosives and armed with automatic weapons were involved in the raid.”

“Taliban launch attacks in Kabul, kill UN workers”

SNIPPET: “The Taliban also fired a rocket at the posh Serena Hotel (which was the scene of a similar armed assault in early 2008) and at the presidential compound.”
yep. That’s why I cringed each and every time she’d say those words.
You know, at the time, I thought that also.
Explosion rocks Pakistan’s city of Peshawar, police says. No word on casualties.

Afghanistan IS becoming Obamas Vietnam.
And Obama ironically, is becoming Nixon.
Could you start a new thread for Peshawar and I’ll be there shortly.
Thanks rdl6989.
It’s more than just ironic that I find myself aligned with the Get Out Now loonbags like Cindi Sheehan and Code Pink—but the fact is that the pathologically political Obamsky administration will only get more Americans killed in Afghanistan to no purpose.
If you heard Kerry the other day, clearly, their “strategy” is to keep blaming Bush for problems with the war and see if that plays in Peoria. I don’t think they have any other real interest in Afghanistan.
As for NATO, they are merely an administrative arm of the US military. Almost useless when it comes time for heavy lifting.
Why is it unfair to compare McChrystal with Westmoreland? IMHO, the parallels, most notably the continual calls for more and more troops, are remarkably close. The main difference is the McChystal main claim to distinction before this was covering up details of the Pat Tillman killing. For some strange reason, McChystal is treated almost as a deity here.....when the truth is that he is just another general who wants more troops. He already got thousands at the beginning of Obama's term and now he comes back again!
BTW, I loved you in Merrill's Marauders. Now there was a general!
General Westmoreland along with President Lyndon B. Johnson, Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Earl Wheeler thought that search-and-destroy and large scale engagements would have the positive results that they had in WWII and Korea- victory through attrition. They resisted the advice of counter-insurgency expert Robert Thompson and that of the Marine Commander General David M. Shoup.
General McChrystal understands the need to fit the strategy to the circumstances. In Afghanistan, he is implementing a counter-insurgency strategy, which requires higher troop levels than are presently deployed. Insinuating that he is “just another general who wants more troop” is a statement ignorant of the man and his expertise.
And before you state that “McChystal(s) main claim to distinction before this was covering up details of the Pat Tillman killing.”, I suggest that you research this man’s military record.
Your comments remind me of the kind of crap I’ve been hearing about the military from leftist scum for the past four decades. It would be more appropriate at the DK or DU websites.
Ah....the old stab in the back excuse. This theory reminds me of the leftists who say that the Great Society would have worked "if only LBJ had spent more money." Excuses excuses.
Let's talk some reality. The ARVN "stabbed themselves in the back" when they ran like scared rabbits (like George Costanza during a fire) for American helicopters instead of standing and fighting. They were so weak in their dedication to the cause that the couldn't even launch an insurgency once the Commies took over. It reminds me of the old joke: "The South Vietnamese army doesn't know the meaning of the word fear....and table and chair and a lot of other words." Merrill's Marauders they were not.
It’s pretty hard to fight without ammo. Or medical supplies.
We made a commitment to the South Vietnamese and they trusted us. The Democrats cut off all aid and left them twisting in the wind. The Democrats dishonored our country.
Don’t take my word for it. General Vo Nguyen Giap, the NV commander himself said that they had lost the war, but they knew that if they hung on long enough that the Left in the U.S. would undermine America’s resolve. The Left has also spread their malicious lies about the war and our military for impressionable fools to believe.
Your slander the American military and the South Vietnamese military is based upon popular culture, not history.
It is not slander if it is the truth. These excuses simply can't explain ARVN failure to either stand or fight or launch an insurgency. Countless insurgent movements have been launched without some sugar daddy supply "ammo." Two cases in point were the Phillipine insurgency against the U.S. at the turn of the last century and the initial Afghan insurgency against the Soviets. AIn all cases, they either made their own ammo or captured (or stole) if from the enemy. The key equation in war is fighting will. That's why the Confederates, who had virtually no domstic ammo production, held on so long. The ARVN didn't have that.

Warden Message: Afghanistan UN Guest House Attack
CONSULAR AFFAIRS BULLETINS
South / Central Asia - Afghanistan
28 Oct 2009
U.S. Embassy Kabul released the following Warden Message on October 28:
Shortly after 6:00 a.m. this morning, a group of insurgents attacked a United Nations guest house in Wazir Akbar Khan. The attack was reportedly initiated by a suicide bomber wearing a police uniform. Afghan National Security Forces responded to the residence, at which point a shootout ensued. At least six UN workers, including one American, were killed in the attack. Afghan National Security Forces killed 2-4 insurgents and captured three.
Also this morning, three rockets/mortars were fired on the Serena Hotel. The hotel sustained property damage but no injuries were reported.
The U.S. Embassy is operating under normal business conditions. No travel restrictions are in place although non-essential travel has been deferred for the remainder of today. The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests in Afghanistan. Americans are reminded that explosions, shooting, demonstrations and rioting can occur with little or no warning. Current intelligence reports suggest that the Taliban, al-Qaida, and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics including suicide operations, assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, and bombings.
We remind American citizens of the continuing threats outlined in the current Travel Warning for Afghanistan and Worldwide Caution. The full text of each can be found at http://travel.state.gov. Updated information may also be obtained by visiting the American Embassys website http://usembassy.state.gov/afghanistan/ or by contacting the Embassy at usconsulkabul@state.gov. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays). Americans are also encouraged to read the Country Specific Information for Afghanistan, available on the Embassys website at http://kabul.usembassy.gov, and also at http://travel.state.gov.
The U.S. Embassy is located at Great Masood Road between Radio Afghanistan and the Ministry of Public Health (the road is also known as Bebe Mahro or Airport Road) in Kabul.
