Gingrich calls GOP support for Hoffman a 'purge' By Jordan Fabian - 10/27/09 09:47 AM ET

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) late Monday had some choice words for Republicans supporting Conservative Party party candidate Doug Hoffman (N.Y.), accusing them of conducting a "purge" of the GOP.

Many national Republican figures, such as Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-Minn.) and ex-Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska), have backed Hoffman over GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava in the 23rd district's special election this year. The district has been long-held by Republicans, but many conservatives have shied away from Scozzafava for her socially liberal positions and the local GOP's selection process that they say was not transparent.

Gingrich broke the mold and backed Scozzafava, saying her candidacy gave the Republicans the best shot of regaining a congressional majority. The former Speaker faced a push-back from the right after his announcement but he upped the ante on Monday.

"This idea that we're suddenly going to establish litmus tests and all across the country we're going to purge the party of anybody who doesn't agree with us 100 percent; that guarantees Obama's reelection, that guarantees Pelosi as Speaker-for-life," he told Fox News last night.

Gingrich called Scozzafava a "liberal Republican" for her support of gay marriage and abortion rights. But he defended those positions as in-step with her district and her predecessor, former Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.), who was tapped to be President Barack Obama's Army Secretary.

But he said that her endorsement from the National Rifle Association, her signing a no tax-increase pledge, and her opposition to cap-and-trade and healthcare reform legislation made her "adquately conservative in an upstate New York district."

Gingrich also attacked Hoffman for not having proper knowledge of local issues and living outside the 23rd district.

"So I say to many conservative friends who suddenly decided whether they're from Minnesota, or Alaska, or Texas, they know more than the upstate New York Republicans? I don't think so," he added.

Newt is all about Newt. He IS a very smart guy, and his own ideas are usually pretty good, but sometimes, when it’s convenient to do so, he’ll support a position or a person that makes no sense.

This is one of those times.

This was so disappointing. I really LIKE Newt.
But he is WAY off on this statement. And “from the rivers of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Makes you wonder...

I’m from upstate New York Newt and YOU don’t know what you’re talking about.

MEMO to Newt: NO More going along to get along, no more RINO’s. You should spend your time with the current elected GOPers in the Congress and make sure this socialist health plan is defeated. Leave New York to New Yorkers, and we prefer Hoffman to Dede.

How about 1%? Heck, I probably agree with Obama on 1% of issues.

You forgot to include people from Georgia in there too Newt.

Being from upstate NY; I say to my RINO friend from Georgia, who suddenly decided that he knows more about upstate NY politics, than upstate New York Conservatives??....I DON”T THINK SO NEWT!!!

Hey Newt, the little people are pissed.

If he really wanted to win elections, he would be at least trying to understand why this has happened.

But he is right about one thing. We are trying to “purge” the GOP. Purge meaning vomit up all the RINOs that have destroyed it. Including him.

You CANNOT compromise with RINOS or DIMS. They are liars and back stabbers.

I always thought she resembled Dorian Gray’s portrait, myself. ;-)

Bathory used to bathe in blood of murdered young women, yes?
I can see San Fran Gran Nan doing that! ANYTHING goes in SF nowadays, I wouldn’t be surprised! ;-)

Wow. Newt is all in, with nothing in his hand. A textbook example of "jumping the shark". And here's who he has chosen to champion … as the future of the party:

An-ACORN-friendly-Big Labor-backing-Tax-and-Spend-Radical-Pro-Choice-Calling-Cops-on-Reporters-Feminista who Markos Moulitsas Zuniga (Daily Kos) characterized as "willing to raise taxes when budgets require it, and is to the left of most Democrats on social issues.”

Oh yes Newt, the purge is on and you have chosen extremely unwisely.

Hey Newt, its not just the GOP that needs purged, its the entire elected body.

What you are seeing in this race is far larger than simply a backlash against liberal GOP members.

Its the people finally saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, YOU WORK FOR US AND WE WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK.

I understand your concerns, but you are grossly misreading some very very big tea leaves Newt. Get out of the betlway more.

WE THE PEOPLE didn’t have the internet, tea parties, and town hall protests back then, so a large number of people were ignorant, uninformed, or misinformed.

NOT ANY MORE.
