Minuteman/Neighborhood NY-23 Poll: Hoffman +5
Real Clear Politics ^ | October 27, 2009 | Minuteman/Neighborhood

For the second time in two days, a poll released by a conservative group finds Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman leading the Nov. 3 special election race for New York's 23rd District. Neighborhood Research polled the district for Minuteman PAC, the political arm of the Minuteman Movement, which has endorsed Hoffman and is airing ads on his behalf.

Hoffman leads Democrat Bill Owens by 5 points and GOP nominee Dede Scozzafava by 20 points.

Hoffman 34
Owens 29
Scozzafava 14
Und 23

The poll was taken Oct. 25-26 of 366 likely voters. The three candidates are vying to replace former congressman John McHugh (R-N.Y.), who was appointed by President Obama to be Secretary of the Army.

Club for Growth, a fiscally conservative group, released a poll yesterday showing Hoffman up 4 points. CfG has also endorsed Hoffman in the race.

Hey, maybe the Club For Growth poll yesterday may have been valid after all. A sample of 366 sounds reasonable to me, for a poll for an area as small as a congressional district, given that polls for the whole of New York City usually have a sample of less than a 1,000.

More good news....however, I’m still waiting for a public poll to confirm this. Show a NYT, WSJ, Rasmussen, Gallup poll that says the same thing.

FWIW, I also didn’t believe the DailyKos either showing Hoffman behind.

The big guys usually don’t poll congressional districts. That leaves these other polls to rely on.

The only poll that means anything happens next Tuesday.

If the GOP really cared about principles, and if the GOP really wanted to oppose the Democrats, then Scozzafava would drop out and ensure a win for Hoffman.

At this point, I see the Republican candidate as a spoiler -- like Ross Perot -- and serving no purpose other than to get a Liberal Democrat elected.

Pretty much
I am hoping we get a Rasmussen poll for NY23 this week.
I wouldn't trust an NYT poll on this one though. The NYT has been peddling fishy push polls in the New Jersey elections since last week, in order to push Corzine over the top.

We need to be aware that the RINOs will happily toss this race to the democrat rather than let Hoffman win. A Hoffman win creates real problems for the GOP elite.

My rule of thumb regarding RINOs: RINOs are lying, manipulative, bottom feeding scum who will happily hand a seat to a democrat if they think they can use fear to put it in RINO hands the next time around.

At this very moment, the ACORNS are emerging from the slime.

She will never drop out. Forget it. She is a DIABLO (Democrat In All But Label Only). Her kind, never drop out of anything, when they can do damage to the Republican Party. Meanwhile, I am sure she has had a phone call from Soros, promising her a nice fat check if she screws up Hoffman's chances of winning, and the Democrat wins.

Ravi is correct. The national pollsters don’t poll individual congressional districts.

Everything depends on turnout in a special election. Doug Hoffman does seem to be getting folks fired up.

Dede needs to step aside for the good of the party. She needs to stop splitting the vote so the one who can win will win. Dede, please stop being so divisive and wasting the RNC’s money.

Of course.

The standard line has always been "Conservatives should not go third party, because that just gets Liberals elected." Well, here we have a very clear case that the third party guy can actually win -- and it's the support for the Republican which may result in the election of a Liberal.

It's all topsy-turvy. The GOP needs to understand that the rules have changed: Conservatives will support Conservatives. If those Conservative candidates are in the GOP, that's all fine and good. But if the RNC supports non-Conservatives, they will embolden third party efforts.

I read a lot of less than complimentary comments about Mr. Hoffman here after his appearance on Glenn Beck Monday afternoon. So I deliberately watched the rebroadcast tonight.

What I saw is exactly what the Founders wanted from us; a regular, normal citizen. Worried about our future and prepared to stand up for that ol’ mothballed thing...that dumb old Constitution. The founders cautioned us to make sure that we elected “regular” people. THEY didn’t invent a system of pensions for lawmakers, WE did. According to them, no person should earn such a thing. They were to serve their nation, and and return home.

And btw, when I am Queen of the land, the first thing I eliminate are Congressional Pensions!

He’s not slick, not photogenic, not polished. But with Mr. Hoffman I saw the future, via the past, IF we have the courage. He is the kind of representative that we were told to find, so long ago. Honest and decent, ready to go home to tend to his own knitting when the job is done.

This unemployed lady is making another modest donation.

(Note to Questar...it will be another couple days, gang.)

The results between the two polls are very similar. Combine them into one “meta-poll,” and you get a good sample size of about 700 voters. The problem is no-one can guess how accurate the turnout modelling will be. But it sure is promising... and reverses the argument that “a vote for Hoffman is a vote for Owens” into “a vote for Scuzzy is a vote for Owens.”

Newt had some terrible things to say about Hoffman last night on Greta. He also claims Hoffman does not even live in the district. Would that disqualify him? Will anyone up there listen to Newt anyway?

I don’t think this contradicts the DailyKOS poll. The DailyKOS poll itself confirmed Hoffman as a viable candidate and Scuzzy as a likely loser, and was therefore a big boost for Hoffman. Since then, Sarah Palin and many other GOP populist stars have sided with Hoffman.

Hoffman isn’t perfect but he does seem like the kind of guy who says what he means and means what he says. A man who will represent the people of his district.

Wow, Newt... When under fire, way to whip out that flourescent orange target with a black bullseye! He must be trying to get a job as the representative Republican on some news show.
