Ernestina Mondragon blinked in the glare of TV lights, seated for her news conference among family and friends at a table in the back of Tejano Mexican Restaurant at Davis and Beckley in north Oak Cliff on Sunday afternoon. Speaking Spanish translated by her daughter, Brenda, and her lawyer, Domingo Garcia, she said she was humiliated Oct. 2 when a Dallas police officer pulled her over for an illegal U-turn and then wrote her a ticket for driving without being able to speak English. "I felt I'd been looked down on and discriminated against," she said.

Here’s the question:
When questioned on why she disobeyed a traffic law, was her response “No habla english.” Because if that was her excuse for not knowing the traffic laws before driving a vehicle, then she should have been ticketed. I don’t give a rats rump about how humiliated she felt.
An inability to read English should be sufficient cause to charge for driving recklessly. Maybe she will come to that conclusion when she sails past the sign that says ‘Danger Bridge Out’!
Cry me a river. Oh, and Learn The Language!
Her daughter was on TV last night saying her mother could not read her ticket and when she read the charges to her mother (illegal u-turn, NO DRIVER’S LICENSE, unable to speak English), her mother was “confused.”
It seems that after the mother got a lawyer, this story has changed.
No, her daughter was translating for her.
There. Fixed it.
Mr Salazar really needs to find himself opposed in his next election by someone who has a clue.
The new Texas DL.
the next question is , are deaf people allowed to drive and is sign language considered to be English ?
I heard from my former DPD son-in-law that commercial drivers DO have to speak English and can get a ticket for it when stopped for something else.
That’s correct but that doesn’t apply to this stop as it was a non commercial vehicle.
Right. so they try to hype it up as an ‘emotional’ scam....always with liberals it’s the ‘emotional’ not the justice of our laws.
What a hideous porker
Did she get a ticket for not speaking English, or did the officer note it on the ticket for future court use. To ensure a translator in court?
Ticket her again for being stupid...
The left is big on distorting facts. The most probable cause for the officer to write that on the ticket is because he had trouble understanding her and wanted to point out the reason for any confusion. He wasn't giving her a ticket for not speaking English, although I think the laws should read that you can't get a drivers license unless you can speak Englis, but that is up to individual states.
At any rate the left has blown this all out of proportion and buried the real facts of why she was ticketed, and I hope the Dallas police department goes to court on this.
Why should they? The government will print everything in their native language, and provided them interpreters when needed....And then bill *YOU* for all expenses.
He wasn’t giving her a ticket for not speaking English,
Yes the officer wrote a ticket for not speaking English and for not having her DL on her while driving. DPD has written 39 of those not speaking English tickets in the last 3 years. They are in error as the English speaking applies to commercial licenses/vehicles only. They are now going back and dimissing those tickets and refunding any monies collected for them.
Then I don’t understand why she would feel humiliated for being told she couldn’t speak english when she couldn’t speak english.
“I felt I’d been looked down on and discriminated against,”
oh boo-frikkinhoo. Learn English. It helps when yer cashin’ yer welfare check, Toots.
And that relates to this case, how?
You were a tourist, she has been in our country 30 years.
Presumably, you'd have your international driver's license with you, she didn't have her driver's license.
