I always also mention that I have laid off all of my staff (true). I say it in a calm manner, of course.
I think it is good to do this because, even tho the person on the other end of the line is just a ‘lowly’ clerk/inside sales rep, they are usually pretty young and I think they need to experience, first-hand, the impact that a weak economy has directly on them; my small business is struggling, so I can’t order from them.
I actually had one young lady ask me when she should call me back and I told her, “Oh, I’m sure you’ll be following the news and will hear when President Obama has sent bailout checks to all of us small companies, so when you hear on the news that President Obama is sending money to small business owners then be sure to give me a call”. She chuckled and said, “I hear you”.
My family (we are family-owned) has heard me do this schtick so many times now that they just roll their eyes when I launch into it :)
