One of the best ways to determine someone's true political philosophy is to observe the people who support him/her. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is planning to run against Governor Rick Perry in the Texas Republican Primary next March, putting the state GOP in a tough spot. They are being forced to take sides against two leaders of the party, each of whom claims to be the more conservative.
As I outlined in a previous column, Hutchison is pro-choice (not a conservative position), while Perry is pro-life (a strong conservative position). Hence, although the Senator claims to be a staunch Republican, on this issue she is more aligned with the Democratic Party.

No. It is those like you who undermine the foundations who "guarantee collapse," not those like me who work every day to shore up those foundations.
You're massively deceiving yourself.
If you will not defend the unalienable God-given rights to life and liberty, you are part of the problem. You're helping to destroy America.
Strawman.
What is non-negotiable for you politically?
This argument has been used for the last 40 years (the lesser of two evils argument) and where has it gotten us?
To me, if a person does not respect the most basic right - the right to life - and MOST ESPECIALLY - does not believe it is imperative to protect an innocent baby's right to life - well then, THERE'S NO WAY THEY CAN BE A CONSERVATIVE. And I'm not talking in a social conservative kind of way - I'm talking about our God-given Constitutional rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
This stuff about just getting an (R) in office, and then we'll worry about the other stuff is not working.
Wow. I sure wouldn't want to be in a fox-hole with you.
Trying to get in through the back door is what gave us John McCain. Voting for RINOs hasn't helped the pro-life issue one little bit. I, and millions of people like myself, have not conceded that fight - we are not giving up. If we do - ALL of our other freedoms will disappear as well.
It's principles over party - that's the ONLY way to victory.
yes, she is. Now she is using libturd tactics in a teaser commercial.
OMG, what is he not telling us? We'll tell you in a few weeks.
We have been hearing this nonsense for nearly 37 years now.
We have been "in the house" and have had "that chance" and failed to complete the mission.
Congressman Duncan L. Hunter introduced the Right to Life every year for over 10 years, after Dornan passed the torch to him. During the 109th session, when the so-called republicans held both houses of CONgress and the White House, the bill had over 100 cosponsors, but NOTHING came of it. Why? The RINOS and those that keep mouthing the words, "you have to go through the back door to get in the house" nonsense.
I don't see the demonRATS using that faux excuse to get what they want. They damn the torpedoes and charge full speed ahead giving no quarter.
Making the choice issue the single and most important criteria...
No one is making it the single or even the most important criteria, but it most definitely needs to be discussed.
What I am saying is get in the door first and then do something about the right to life.
Again, what I am saying is -- BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!
Results = ZERO!
This is an e-mail from my local party chairman:
Fellow 912ers and Patriots
On Tuesday night the 20th we had the pleasure to hear Debra Medina speak at the Republican Hdqtrs and also at the MCM Elegante. For those of you that attended thank you and for those of you that did not you missed a great opportunity to hear a true conservative. I had checked her out via the internet however I must say it did not do her justice as she was much more impressive in person than the net portrayed her to be. She addressed all questions either in the group forum or personally after the main event and did it with an expertise that I was more than amazed with. If in the future you have the chance to go and see her speak in person I encourage you to do so I assure you that you will not be disappointed. Her campaign is a true grassroots movement just as we are and it is on the move just as I think her political future is. For those in the 912 group that are familiar with the contract we drew up she signed on to those priciples. It was said to me that she is the Texas version of Sarah Palin and I can see that after hearing her and getting to visit with her on a personal level. We as a group do not endorse candidates but speaking on a very personal level I think I have found someone that I can put my support behind and I feel very encouraged by that. Do go and ck her out.....
Patriot and American standing up for the Constitution and Freedom!
Will you?
“What is non-negotiable for you politically?”
FREEDOM! Just like our founding fathers sought when they founded this country.
Come back to this thread in 10 years to see if Free Republic is still here (if not shut down by the Ministry of Truth and by then, Jim Robinson thrown into jail for hate crimes against the state).
Simply base your entire support on only one criteria to support a conservative candidate (right to life) and I’m sure this website won’t be here then after the Marxists, Communists and Liberals are through with us during the Obama dictatorship.
I see both arguments on this issue. In our Freerepublic group, pro-life is probably a consistent #1 issue among members, and your thought that if one does not respect life, which is one that has been deemed inalienable by our Founders, the rest doesn’t matter. I agree with some caveats. First, one can be a solid conservative without being 100% of pro-life issues. Some of the pro life issues are political in terms of what is the role of government in deciding the legality or illegality of abortion, and secondly is it a Federal or state issue. Regardless of one’s belief, it became a Federal issue in the early 70s with Roe v. Wade. With that, it became a federal right to get abortion, which is one of the worst decisions ever made by the Supreme Court. I am not entirely familiar with KBH’s full views on abortion, but it certainly is to the left of the Republican Party and most GOP voters. I am not sure how far left she is on the issue.
The second factor here, is the author’s discussion of pro-life being a single issue whereas some voters will either support or oppose a particular candidate, and here is where I fully agree. The conservative movement is one focused on the proper constitutional role of government and looking for candidates with the overall overriding philosophy of limiting the power of the Federal government and against central planning. IMO, at this juncture we are wise to refocus on supporting candidates which bring this particular core principle with them to office. In many cases, we have ended up with candidates or elected officials who are 100% on the life issues, but who fall far short on a lot of other core principles. This is one of the problems we have with the party drifting closer to big government lite. The first and foremost focus needs to be on electing people that are going to stop this radical growth of government we have seen for some time now.
You don’t even understand freedom’s premises.
What the founders of this great republic called “self-evident,” ie “as plain as the nose on your face,” you can’t even see. You’ve gone blind.
Wasn’t it Governor Rick Perry that flew in on the tax payers money to lay the first brick at a new Muslim Center in Plano Texas?

I do agree that abortion should be a state’s issue, not a federal one. In fact, I think most things should be, so in that way - we agree.
Thanks.
Freepmail me or ping me from the original thread to get on/off the 2010 Texas Governor's Race ping list.
“I wish we had a third choice.”
We do have a third choice in the form of Debra Medina... someone who is considerably more interested in defending Texas sovereignty from the unconstitutional actions of the federal government and someone whose views are clearly more conservative and based upon the principles of limited government and freedom than either Rick or Kay.
As her campaign has really got going here over the last few weeks (I expect in the next couple of polls that she will get into the teens) if enough of us get behind her it won’t be long before she’s being mentioned alongside the two establishment candidates as a legitimate contender for the likely runoff in the Republican primary.
I would encourage everyone to check out her website, go see where she stands on the issues, and if you are open-mined about her candidacy I promise you will like what you read.
