Guardsmen shipping out next week to Afghanistan

Members of a Tucson Army National Guard unit are shipping out late next week for a year-long tour in Afghanistan.

More than 80 members of the 158th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion will help provide food, water, ammunition, fuel and other necessities to U.S. and allied troops in the war zone.

The citizen soldiers will spend several weeks training at Fort Hood in Texas before heading overseas. They are due to return to Tucson in October 2010, said Maj. Paul Aguirre, a spokesman at Arizona Army National Guard headquarters in Phoenix.

About half of the unit's 84 soldiers are from Southern Arizona; the rest are from elsewhere in the state.

For many, it's their second time overseas. About 30 unit members have been previously deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, Aguirre said.

Will keep them all in my prayers. May God be with them and His warrior angels fight by their side and may they come home safe to their families.

I wonder how many are from the Apache nation? Could some be the great grandsons of Geronimo, Cochise or Victorio? Those ole Apache’s never used water boarding in their day to get information.

Hoo-ah, pals and gals. My daughter’s just back last month, said Iraq was even more boring the second time around. Buddy at work was in Mehtar Lam, Afghan for most of a year - he wasn’t bored. God speed.

Notice that these guys are combat support troops. Beans, bullets, water, etc.

The US Army can't go to war without the Guard and/or Reserve forces, who provide the bulk of such capabilities.

Salute to the troops of the 158th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, Arizona Army National Guard.

May God go with them, and a host of His Guardian Angels.

These men are the bravest and the best.
