Top Republicans jump ship in NY-23
Andy Barr Fri Oct 23, 7:12 pm ET
Some of the most prominent names in national Republican Party politics are lining up against the GOP nominee in a key upstate New York House special election, the latest being former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who weighed in Friday.
In endorsing Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman in the Nov. 3 contest, Santorum joined former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, and former presidential candidate Steve Forbes, all of whom announced their backing for the conservative third-party candidate this week.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty suggested Friday that he might be the next well-known Republican to break with the party establishment and support Hoffman. When asked about the race Friday during an interview with ABC, he expressed frustration with GOP nominee Dede Scozzafava and said he will probably endorse in the race.
Scozzafava, a state assemblywoman who supports gay marriage, abortion rights and has a close relationship with leading labor officials in her region, has been the target of sustained criticism from conservatives who claim that she is so liberal that they cannot in good conscience support her candidacy. As evidence, they point to her unofficial endorsement from the leading liberal blog Daily Kos.
While Scozzafava can point to many other prominent conservatives who support her bidincluding former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Republican leaders on Capitol Hillthis weeks surge of leading conservatives to Hoffmans camp is a troubling sign for her campaign and the national GOP establishment since several of the recent Hoffman endorsers have significant followings and represent the most energetic part of the Republican base.

It is disgusting to see certain people supporting Scuzz lady “for the party.”
Been there, done that and will continue to do that.
If it's so easy then why wasn't it done years a go when there was less socialism in the party than there is today?
First of all your premise is off. The Republican party of the 60's and 70's was more socialist than it is today.
Anyway, the awakening of constitutionalism in this country by like-minded people through the new media is on the rise over the last decade and it's approaching the positive tipping point.
As I said, It's a lot easier to kick out a few RINOS than it is easier to migrate 60 million voters.
Why don't you go research the time, effort, and money required to start a new party (there's already more than 50 third parties), establish the organization and fundraising, set up offices in every county in all 57™ states, and meet the FEC and state requirements to get candidates on ballots in all those 57™ states.
We already have the Republican party. It is our party. We paid for it, and we are taking it back.
I like it. My envelope will be included in Monday's outgoing mail - except it'll be empty and the note will be in HUGH sharpie - on the outside. (It maybe time to just get a Palin rubber stamp.)
I have a large Bull S*&( stamp that I apply before returning the mailing at their expense.
It may take a few election rounds or two, but it’s long overdue.
Hoffman is better off without the endorsement of Huckabee and Romney.
It’s a New York State party only right now. The one in New Jersey is separate, and there may be others.
Catsimatidis, big Democrat donor who slept in the Lincoln Bedroom when BJC was prez.
While they are abandoning their following of McCain/Rinos, now that they know the Rinos are losing stinks, maybe they should demand that McCain show them the copy of Obama’s birth certificate and other records they he claims to have used to verify Obama’s NBC status. Also they should ask McCain what laws he used to decide a NBC is someone born to foreing parent(s).
>> Tine for Newt Gingrich to jump ship as well!
A bit of quandary for Newt.
He should avoid the issue of NY 23 and focus on other Conservative concerns. I’m not interested in hearing an explanation, and neither should he betray the candidate he already endorsed.
Rick finally learned the lesson from April 2004, but not before Arlen skipped parties after all. Now, if he can get GWB on board, Hoffman is definitely finished.
Boy, is that right! So far as NY-23 is concerned, Newt's best course would be to just shut-up. Anything he says now is only going to make it worse.
Huckabee can just say he didn’t know anything about a race in northern NY state so far from AR.
Almost none of the politicians on that list would lift a serious finger to promote the conservative cause. Now they won’t vote for all liberal programs, but some would join liberals when their vote could be critical.
Even Nelson A. Rockefeller let a “conservative”, Malcolm Wilson, be lieutenant governor all those years.
bttt
Are you joking? It's true that Pawlenty doesn't exactly have the most iron-cored spine around, but that statement is simply bilious nonsense.
