Bond Speaks Out Against Cap and Trade
Email news letter | 10-23-2009 | Christopher (Kit) Bond

Bond Speaks Out Against Cap-and-Trade Senator Bond continues to fight against cap-and-trade legislation that threatens Missouri families and farmers with higher energy prices and job losses. The bill proposed by Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and John Kerry (D-MA) sets even stricter emissions targets than the House-passed Waxman-Markey bill. The Senate bill also removes provisions that require the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to be fair to ethanol producers and to protect energy-intensive manufacturing jobs in the United States that are exposed to unfair competition in China, an unsettling fact as experts say that the Waxman-Markey bill alone will eliminate 2.4 million net U.S. jobs. “The Boxer-Kerry bill is a giant new energy tax on America’s families and workers,” said Senator Bond at a news conference with other Republican senators opposed to the bill. “My Missouri constituents are saying no to this job-killing and tax-raising bill and so will I.” A recent study by the National Association of Manufacturers found that the Waxman-Markey bill will eliminate up to 59,000 Missouri jobs by 2030 and cut the household income of Missouri families by $1,300 per year. Senator Bond has emphasized that this will in part be due to higher electricity prices that President Obama has admitted “would necessarily skyrocket” under the cap-and-trade legislation. Furthermore, Senator Bond has pointed out that key details of the Boxer-Kerry bill remain hidden and that – thus far – the programs meant to blunt the cost of the increases are not funded.

Missouri Constituents Make Their Voice Heard

The detrimental effects of cap-and-trade are understood not only on Capitol Hill, but also back home in Missouri. This month, Senator Bond was presented with thousands of correspondence signed by Missouri constituents against cap-and-trade legislation. Members of the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives (AMEC) presented the Senator with 50,000 postcards signed by cooperative consumer-members and the Missouri Farm Bureau (MFB) brought with them more than 3,400 letters from Missouri farmers and ranchers all of whom oppose the cap-and-trade legislation. Barry Hart, Executive Vice President and CEO of the AMEC said, “We want to make sure our members’ voices are heard. These thousands of cards are tangible evidence that cooperative consumers are paying attention and have real concerns about this legislation.” Charlie Kruse, President of the MFB said, “Our members are knowledgeable about this cap-and-trade legislation and they are very concerned. We appreciate all of Senator Bond’s hard work on this issue. If the goal of Congress is to transfer money from the pockets of American families to the federal coffers then the bill that the House has passed is a good one.” New Report Shows Cap-and-Trade is a $3.6 Trillion Dollar Gas Tax This week, Senators Bond and Hutchison released a report, Climate Change Legislation: A $3.6 Trillion Dollar Gas Tax, which shows that the cap-and-trade proposals will result in massive new gas tax on American families, farmers, truckers and workers. The report reveals how climate legislation, such as the House-passed Waxman-Markey bill, will increase the price of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, and it details how those new taxes will affect farmers growing crops, workers driving to work, truckers delivering goods and other businesses running operations. The report also highlights that while provisions in proposed climate change bills intend to reduce the impact of these massive costs, their impact is extremely modest, leaving consumers with a $3.6 trillion gas tax bill. “Cap-and-trade is a giant new gas tax on America’s families, farmers and workers,” said Senator Kit Bond. “We should not increase pain at the pump in these tough times.” The report issued by Senators Bond and Hutchison is supported by a variety of farming, small business and trucking consumer groups including the National Federation of Independent Business, American Highway Users Alliance, American Trucking Association, American Farm Bureau and National Black Chamber of Commerce. Finding Meaningful Solutions While Senator Bond opposes the massive energy taxes that cap-and-trade legislation will impose, he stresses that cutting carbon emissions and finding clean energy solutions are extremely important. However, the Senator believes it is critical that these solutions do not cut family budgets and workers’ jobs. Senator Bond is a strong supporter of many alternative energy sources including zero-carbon nuclear power, lower-carbon biofuels, hybrid, plug-in and electric car and truck technology to clean coal emissions, and wind and solar power where it makes economic sense.

This just came into my email box. Take it for what it's worth. Bond is a lame duck. I would have voted against him had he run again.
