Romer: Impact of stimulus will level off

A top White House economist says spending from the $787 billion economic stimulus has already had its biggest impact on economic growth and will likely not contribute to significant expansion next year.

Christina Romer, the chair of President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, said Thursday that the $194 billion already spent gave a jolt to the economy that contributed to growth in the second and third quarters of the year. She told a congressional panel that by the middle of next year, the impact of the stimulus will level off. Romer said spending so far has saved or created 600,000 to 1.5 million jobs but warned that unemployment will remain high, above 9.5 percent, through the end of 2010.

These people are only kidding themselves. 49 states have fewer jobs than when stimulus was passed.

There is no recovery happening.

A lot of these jobs are road construction jobs. Once the money is gone, the jobs are gone. Nothing sustainable.

What “impact”?

Zero is holding off spending the other half of the Stimulus in order to buy votes before the next election. The only thing is that if unemployment does not ease up significantly Democrats will have a very hard time next fall.

IE. They are sitting on the Stimulus, dithering, while more folks go into the unemployment hole.

The primary reason for the (until now largely unspent) “stimulus” is to buy votes for the 2010 mid-terms; I’d be more interested in seeing an evaluation of it in those terms.

Point number one in following these clowns is to remember above all they are Chicago pols, and everything they do - slamming Fox, co-opting business organizations, insinuating themselves into corporate structures, trying to regulate broadcast and internet affairs, etc. - is geared to greasing their route to reelection.

That which has not been felt will become less noticeable.

The American economy has lost jobs every month of this year. How exactly is growth occurring?

[BTW...do you have ANY idea how hard it is to find a leather riding crop in my area? Frankly, I’m exhausted]

Bodhisattva has come. There is a cypress tree outside the door.

I hope this isn’t too much of a “koan-tradiction.”

That’s pretty funny.

But ‘Hunting Girl’ has more innuendo/entendré per verse [snicker] than any other Tull song...and ‘Velvet Green’ takes up the slack as a close second.

Bah.

Approaching cross quarter days really bring out the beastie in me....>:-]
