At the beginning of the summer, most observers expected Republicans to win all three of the big elections on Nov. 3. Two weeks out, it suddenly looks very possible that Republicans will win only one: the Virginia governors race. The other two will be lostnot to superior Democratic organizing and messaging, but to the GOPs own divisions.
By all rights, the special election in New Yorks 23rd Congressional District should be a Republican cakewalk. Stretching across the hunting and fishing towns along the Great Lakes and Canadian border, the district contains Fort Drum, base of the 10th Mountain division, and re-elected its Republican congressman in the disaster years of 2006 and 2008 by margins of 60-plus percent.
Yet polls show the Republican candidate in serious trouble. State Republican Party leaders prevented an open primary race and instead engineered the nomination of one of their own, moderate, pro-choice Assemblywoman Deirdre Scozzafava.
Angry conservatives in the 23rd rebelled, rallying to the third-party candidacy of local accountant Doug Hoffman. Hoffman and Scozzafava are splitting the Republican vote between them, allowing Democrat Bill Owen to emerge as the front-runner.

If the GOP’s chosen candidate comes in 3rd, they'll get the message.
Scozzafava has been pulling some real bonehead moves in the last couple of days.
True.
But the liberals win her vote.
This statement is unfortunately extremely true. The "McCain Republicans"* will be simply insufferable if this happens.
* The most recent mutant spawn of "Rockefeller Republicans".
If we get another 4 years of Obama, it will be because the GOP succeeds in nominating a non-conservative candidate.
The GOP vote will be split between Palin and the RINO, and zero will win with 40%.
The way that Scozzafava became the nominee is not a good omen--think 2012 and how the GOP establishment will be determined to prevent any real conservative from winning the nomination (as they have done many times in the past).
Just because steele is entitled doesn’t mean he’s the right man for it.
Hopefully he won’t do any more harm than the rest of the panderers already are.
Amen
Frum is a moron. For Conservatives, the Republican party is a means to an end. For authoritarians, the Democrat party is an end in itself as the authoritarians are close to a permanent one party state.
Ideas matter not labels.
The GOP brought this on itself by eliminating the primary. They are as much the enemy as democrats.
The thing I’d like is ask is 1) What is the difference between a Liberal and a “Moderate” 2) Why is it in the media or opinionsphere ANY republican that has any kind of liberal tendancy is consered a “Moderate” instead of a “Liberal”?
