The chief of the Justice Department’s public integrity section, which came under fire for the botched prosecution of Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, is stepping down from his position.
The official, William M. Welch II, who became a subject of an internal inquiry into the handling of the Stevens case, will return to Massachusetts, where he was a longtime federal prosecutor, and resume his career in that role.
William W. Taylor, a lawyer representing him, said in a statement Wednesday that Mr. Welch had decided to move back to Massachusetts “for family reasons.”
“While the ultimate result in the Stevens case has been highly disappointing professionally and personally,” the statement said, Mr. Welch’s own decisions in the case “comported with his own and the department’s highest ethical standards.” ...
Mr. Breuer said that “we made a mutual decision” that Mr. Welch should step aside, and praised him as an “extremely smart and thoughtful lawyer” and “a dedicated public servant who has devoted his entire professional life to serving the American people.”
Mr. Welch’s departure, effective at the end of this month, is the latest step in an overhaul of the public integrity section, whose reputation as an elite corruption fighter was damaged by the Stevens case.

He isn’t in Alaska, he is in DC. The prosecution and trial took place in the DC federal courthouse. Just in time to prevent Stevens from being re-elected. I would say Welch did his job and now is going home to MA.

What was done to Ted Stevens was awful. Just think about that SCUMBAG(Did he say SCUMBAG? Yes I did!!!) Charlie Rangel. He is still amember of the House. He is as corrupt as the day is long.
Makes sense now.
