Why a “barf alert” for such an obvious reality ? The Gallup breakdown in 2009 has 40% of Americans conservative, 35% as moderate, and 21% as liberal. And that sounds about right.

So yes, the moderates are needed by republicans, unless holding as a 40% “pure” minority appeals to you. The dems likewise face the same reality but with a steeper road.
