CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Seven people pleaded guilty for their part in abusing Megan Williams -- but now Williams says that abuse never happened.

She will hold a press conference Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio, to recant her claims of abuse, attorney Byron L. Potts, who represents Williams, told The Charleston Gazette on Tuesday night.

"She has decided she has been living this lie for approximately two years and she has decided to tell the truth," Potts said. "She fabricated the story and she did this in retaliation because she was having a relationship with one of them."

...and 7 people pleaded guilty?

Something must have happened for those to plead guilty?

Really?

I’m betting she was told to recant.

Or she’d be dead by morning.

They got to her, man.

Yes, the innocent defendants realized they were going away for a long time and took a lesser sentence. I hope this young lady does seriously hard time.

When you have a public defender you will always be told to plead guilty because you have no hope. PD's don't get paid by the hour or by the outcome but by the number of cases they handle.

"The Megan Williams case is beyond a doubt, one of the worst hate crimes in U.S. History. The Megan Williams case is even worse than the case of the Jena 6..." said Attorney Malik Shabazz Esq., Megan Williams Family Attorney and Spokesman for Black Lawyers For Justice, speaking at the October 3rd preliminary hearing in Logan County, West VA. Shabazz also stated, "The number of outright hate crimes and injustice cases against Blacks is rising so rapidly it's hard for our office to keep track. We are calling for every concerned person in our community to respond to this national crisis with vigor and due diligence. The November 3rd March in Charleston is a big step in the direction of organizing to challenge the tide of attacks occurring against Blacks".

Yes, people plead guilty to things they haven’t done, all of the time. The prisons are full of them. First, you are arrested and interrogated by the law. The law can legally lie to you and threaten you: they can tell you they have absolute proof; that others have confessed and implicated you; that no jury is gonna believe you over a woman or other accuser, and that you are sure to be convicted; that if you don’t “co-operate” (ie, confess) you will spend the rest of your miserable life in a hell-hole prison. But, (cue the happy music) if you do co-operate (”ie, “confess”) that they’ll give you a deal and instead of 50 to life, you can get off with a meer 15-20 years with good behavior. What do you think that you would you do?

Sharpton, a national civil rights leader who addressed the 2007 Charleston rally against hate crimes and donated $1,000 to Williams' family as a Christmas gift

I just noticed you’re from Texas. Try siting is a Texas county criminal court sometime and you are guaranteed to see PD’s asking the judge for release (and payment) every time a defendant has made bail. The assumption being, if you can make bail, you can pay a lawyer. They do this usually right before trial because they know some defendants will cough up some money. It’s all run like a big shakedown and the courts are in on it.

Having seen their house, maybe they thought 3 squares a day in prison was actually an upgrade.

“At the time of the plea deals, Megan Williams, her adopted mother Carmen Williams, AND HER ADVISER MALIK SHABAZZ criticized the plea agreements, claiming they were too light a punishment. Shabazz, co-founder of Black Lawyers for Justice and a MEMBER OF THE NEW BLACK PANTHER PARTY, gave Williams and her family legal counsel.”

The information from further along in the article and highlighted in caps above should shed some light on what happened. Mr. Shabazz is quite an “interesting” guy. If you haven't seen him interviewed, you have missed one of the wonders of modern society.

Actually, PDs are paid an annual salary, so they get the same amount no matter how many cases they take. Court appointed attorneys from outside of the PD system, however, are paid by the case and usually do not do as good a job as the PDs.
