Once the apotheosis of a pro-Western, dependable Muslim democracy, this week Turkey officially left the Western alliance and became a full member of the Iranian axis.

Ataturk would not approve and therefore a lot of Turks will not either. We'll see what happens.

By forcing Turkey to curb its military's role as the guarantor of Turkish secularism, the EU took away the secularists' last line of defense against the rising tide of the AKP. By forcing Turkey to treat its political prisoners humanely and cancel the death penalty, the EU eroded the secularists' moral claim to leadership and weakened their ability to effectively combat both Kurdish and Islamist terror.

Didn't know the Euros has done that, and wouldn't have thought that even they could be that stupid. Attaturk knew what he was doing when he made the military the guarantor of Turkish secularism, and he knew why he did it. And here come some Euro fools decades later to give Turkey a big shove toward the world of Islamic fundamentalism.

“Voting gives a voice to the people, which is a good thing only if the people themselves are good.”

You mean, like when they are NOT recruited by ACORN?

Turkey should be dispelled from NATO. To think that they can be a dependable ally is foolhardy

I think all good natured citizens would be ready. I hope you are correct. However the USSR had not been around for 1300 years or so. Islam has quite a longevity.

"Pro Western Muslim Democracy....????

Muslims practice Takfiri, in other words it's O.K. to lie and commit fraud, to further the cause of Islam.

The West doesn't understand the Takfiri concept, so westerners think they can deal with the smiley faced devil.

Bring back the Byzantine Empire, and indeed that of Alexander.

Turkey was only interested in stopping the USSR, and so were we.

Why not recognise that the problem is Islaam. It is that ideology that must be defeated.

Sounds like the opportunity is lost, but we need now is another coup to restore the secular nature of the Turkish government.

Turkey was the first NATO ally to pitch in after 9/11.

Sorry that Turkey is starting to look out for itself now that you have created a de facto country in northern iraq and are protecting terrorists there. Turkey is becoming credible in its neighborhood, and yes, it is creating free trade zones with all countries to its north, east and south. Your stupid status quo with Iran sucks. Your policies in the middle east suck. We’ll get your shit together for you.

Hi,

Fethullah Gulen is the leader of a sect, the members of which include the Turkish President and Prime Minister. This man lives in the US. Best we can figure is that the CIA directs the Turkish goverment through their proxy Gulen. That will certainly not last long.

Thanks for the ping.

"the CIA directs the Turkish goverment through their proxy Gulen."

I am afraid you give too much credit to CIA's abilities.

But, more importantly, do you think that the distancing of Turkey from Israel that we appear to observe would be done under the instructions from the CIA, i.e., American government?

I am really puzzled.
