Friday night, wrapping up the Rush Limbaugh/NFL brouhaha on Fox Newss Special Report with Bret Baier, the panel unanimously decided that Rush had been unfairly smeared as a racist, but that he was way off base in calling Donovan McNabb overrated.
That's the consensus, but the consensus is wrong. Donovan McNabb is consistently a merely above average quarterback with flashes of brilliance who has never justified the hype surrounding him.
Here is the infamous quote (note that usually the first and last sentences are left off of this quote, which makes is sound slightly harsher out of context):

Sorry but Rush was wrong on Mcnab, especially when he said it. Mcnab is a top quarterback Rush bought into the negative hype which passes for Philadelphia sport opinion.
Nothing improper about what Rush said, he just was incorrect.
Rush was dead on concerning McDrabb. The sports press never made a big deal concerning McNair, Culpepper, or Moon - all three much better than McDrabb. The point of Rush’s comment was that the press will not allow a black QB to look bad - even if the QB is average. And that is what McDrabb is - as he has proven time and time again.
I’m not sure why anyone would have a problem understanding that there can be affirmative action in sports reporting just like there is everywhere else. He was right about McNabb but maybe McNabb can be AA’d into the HOF too, since they don’t have their quota of black QBs yet.
He is better than average, but not on par with Manning and Brady like the Media tries to make him out to be.
Look, first of all, I’m a McNabb fan, since I’m a Syracuse fan. That said, he is only a slightly above average quarterback in the NFL, but the media made him into a star. THAT IS THE SAME THING they did to Obama...the MEDIA made him President. Now they will do whatever is in their power to help him succeed.
Who doesn't know the NFL rules governing O.T. and doesn't know how many time outs he has. A real field general there. Not to mention he's erratic and has very poor throwing accuracy. The eagles looked consistently better under Garcia, and Kolb also looked very good in his first two starts, easily filling McNabb's shoes.
That depends if McDrab wants an undeserved HOF or a Nobel HOF
Very few quarterbacks have won superbowls, Mcnabb came within 3 points of beating the Patriots when they were an absolute powerhouse, multiple trips to teh NFC championship game. And btw McNabb got to the Superbowl without TO, who waqs injured in teh playoffs until the superbowl itself.
Further, Rush didn’t say all black quarterbacks were overrated. He said the NFL pushed Mcnabb in particular in order to have a great black quarterback.
To say Mcnabb, a super bowl quarterback who usually played w lousy receivers, isn’t capable as an NFL quarterback is preposterous.
“Sorry but Rush was wrong on Mcnab, especially when he said it. Mcnab is a top quarterback Rush bought into the negative hype which passes for Philadelphia sport opinion.

Really? How many time out’s in a half?
Except when you watch Mcnabb every week like I do, you can see for yourself he is an out and out stud player. Perfect, no. But this is a guy who finished a winning game on a broken leg. He has the ability to shed multiple sackers and still deliver the ball.
How can Rush be right or wrong when you mis-quote Rush.
Per Rush, he never commented on McNabb’s ability.
He commented on the MSM media coverage of McNabb.
By mis-quoting Rush, you are just like the MSM.
I’d compare it to the Chicago media, which still claims that Jay C 3-2 is a better QB than Kyle O 5-0. The media seems to have more incompletes and interceptions than the QBs do.
When blacks, hispanics, asians, latins, romans, eskimos, (whites - oh no God forbid - can’t say that), want ‘their own’ to excel, it’s ok with them. BUT, when you call them out on it - they go berserk.
Im not misquoting Rush I don’t need to worship him either. He can be wrong about a quarterback. Sorry. He certainly said Mcnabb was not as good as the media and NFL wanted to make him out to be.
In my humble opinion Riush was mistaken, Mcnabb is a strong quarterback with a strong record.
But then I know Rush is never wrong, just ask him.
For another example, see David Garrard. Love the man and his personality, but not the best quarterback. I’m starting to wonder if we were still better off with Leftwich.
McNabb: Not the most situationally aware fellow...
By Doug Farrar
He caught a lot of heat last year for not knowing how NFL ties work, though he’s not the only one — heck, even intelligent ex-quarterbacks-turned-announcers get it wrong from time to time. But Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb(notes) must carry the grief alone for his clock-butchering boo-boo in his team’s 13-9 loss to the Oakland Raiders.
Down 10-3 with 27 seconds left in the first half, McNabb went to the line and called a time out after deciding that he didn’t like what he saw on the Raiders’ side of the ball. Problem was, the Eagles had already used their customary three time-outs in the half, and no amount of bargaining could get them another one. Philly was busted for delay of game, the ball was pushed back from the Oakland 15 to the Oakland 20, McNabb took a Richard Seymour(notes) sack on the next play, and the Eagles had to settle for a field goal. Had the Eagles scored a touchdown and kicked the extra point in that drive, they would have had the points needed to tie the Raiders.
Rush certainly was commenting on how the team was doing and how Mcnabb was doing, to say he didn’t comment omn Mcnabb’s ability is preposterous. His whole point was the Eagles were struggling because Mcnabb was overrated and not as good as his hype.
Again, Rush was not racist in his comment, in my opinion he simply was wrong because Mcnabb is an extremely good quarterback.
Now Michael Vick, that is another story.
I guess Rush knew, how many years ago, that Mcnabb would think he still had a timeout last Sunday? I’m not aware Rush said anything about Mcnabb being stupid, forgetful, not knowing the rules. Maybe Mcnabb will get in a car accident someday and that will prove Rush right, also.
There was just an instance of a former top quarterback turned announcer who forgot that NFL overrtimes are sudden death. I guess that guy was no good either because of that mistake.
Give it a rest, Rush Limbaugh isn’t always right.
BTW I think sometime after Rush’s initial comment he was taking credit for motivating Mcnabb to do better.
