This year, cellphone magnate Mo Ibrahim won't be giving a $5 million prize for good governance. Why not?
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - For the past two years, Sudanese-born cellphone magnate Mo Ibrahim has given out $5 million prizes to outstanding African presidents who had served their country with good sense, and then had the good sense to step aside when their terms were over.
Today, Mr. Ibrahim the founder of the cellphone giant Celtel announced that his team was unable to agree on a candidate for the $5 million prize this year, leaving many Africa watchers wondering if he had simply run out of good choices.
For the record, Ibrahim told reporters that "the prize committee could not select a winner," although there has been some speculation that Ibrahim simply lost too much money in the global meltdown last year to be handing out money now. Yet several observers note that the lack of a prize can be seen as a rebuke to African leaders at a time when African democracy seems to be sliding backward.
You think this is a set up to award the prize to the African leader Barack Obama?
No honest African leaders?
Rhetorical question, right? Everyone knows about how Africa is. It be corrupt top to bottom.
And that is the largest block that moves en masse at the UN.
... Most are Islamic based
you beat me to it. But it worth repeating:
It is for Baracks to lose now! But then again, he’s not honest.

It’s because of the meltdown. Africa has a lot of countries and there are several good leaders.
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia is one, Ian Khama of Botswana is another, and there’s also Meles Zenawi of Ethopia who’s done a good job fighting statists and Islamists...that’s just off the top of my head.
I believe the leader can no longer be in office...basically do a good job and leave and will get the cash.
Despite their own rules they had decided to give it to 0bama but changed their mind after the whole Nobel Peace Prize fiasco.
So they didn’t give it to anyone.
