Discerning television viewers may notice a recurrent theme on their favorite shows this week. The doctors on ABC's "Private Practice" give homeless teenagers free check-ups. On NBC's "30 Rock," page Kenneth Parcell tries to adopt all the dogs at an animal shelter. And two characters on CBS' "Numb3rs" talk about joining Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
The outpouring of volunteerism is no coincidence. The storylines were developed for iParticipate, an industry-wide initiative aimed at urging viewers to give back to their communities. Spearheaded by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, one of Hollywood's major charitable organizations and the force behind last year's Stand Up To Cancer telethon, the project has been embraced at an unprecedented level by the networks and studios.
More than 100 programs on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and cable networks such as Nickelodeon and Lifetime will spotlight community service, either through explicit storylines or public service announcements featuring actors such as Emily Deschanel, Eva Longoria Parker and Rainn Wilson.
But while the project has found widespread support in Hollywood, the fact that it dovetails with President Barack Obama's call for national service has fueled suspicion in some conservative circles that iParticipate is an effort to prop up left-wing causes.

Here’s to hoping “Sons of Anarchy” is not participating in this farce...
I wonder how receptive the Networks would have if asked to Push Bush’s “Thousand Points of Lights”?
Too little too late.
If religion hadn’t been all but obliterated from our public square, along with the morals that go along with religious faith, this “initiative” wouldn’t be necessary.
People learn their values for a lifetime when they are children. That doesn’t bode well for our future.
The democrats won't even work for pay. This is a waste of time if they think they can get the democrats off their lazy duffs to work for free.
These viewers vote democrat so they don't have to do anything. To them, any kind of "work" is a four letter word.
Has anyone seen a massive voluntarism movement in this country yet? I haven't. The democrats are sitting back and cheering for everyone else to do it for them!
It's a total joke...
So McCain being involved makes this a bi-partisan effort? I don’t think so.
This kind of underhanded introduction of a political agenda is one reason why I do not like Law and Order. It is over the top with liberal peopaganda the characters deliver during most of the shows.
It is too bad, because some of the plots are interesting. It is really frustrating to get into the story line and then have it ruined because of leftist remarks by the players.
Yeah, Jax and Clay helping out at the local soup kitchen while discussing their carbon footprint.
lol...yeah and they change the name of the club to “Sons of Service”... ;)
If George Bush had asked TV to do this, would they have?

iow they didn’t expect the govt to do those things so they did it themselves.
I guess if we can get them to “tacit endorsement” as opposed to open full-throated campaigning as they were doing last year, that’s progress
Don’t forget that this movement began with the Hollyweird elites, like Courtney Cox, making personal committments to the ‘bama, not unlike the Nazi’s requiring personal loyalty oaths not to Germany, but to the Fuhrer.
I have noticed a running theme all this season of NObama’s supporters as they write episodes for broadcast.
I have turned off a number of shows because of the total lack of entertainment value and the obvious indoctrination.
Can listen to the radio and keep up with the sports scores instead.
The episode of “The New Adventures Of Old Christine” about her panicking and needing a flu shot wasn’t funny in the least.
It demonstrated the Nanny thinking of too many Americans under the age of 45.
I won’t be watching her show ever again, and I find the guy that plays her brother very funny.
