I’ve read and heard various conflicting accounts of the Sheriff’s duties and authority.
In some cases, I’ve heard that it is the Sheriff’s responsibility to protect his county’s citizens from the Feds, and to make sure they act within their jurisdiction.
Other sources say that a Sheriff cannot and will not “interfere” with Federal law enforcement.
