Yes, there is no love lost between the Chineseand Jpanese. andthe Chinese are not liked in Japan either, they are deeply distrusted by the people on the street.,p> But there is also as you say, a strategic and economic evolution.

The present primeminister is weak. He seems to have an anti -military ideology, and will likely weaken his nation and its guraded waters.Liberalism now controls much of Japan. And if it abandons its protector, will it also abandon its own military and sacrifice it to inncreased fuding in social programs in Japan?

In any event, the present evolution is for an increase in China's hegemony over Japan, simmply because Obama is abandoning all of our traditional allies, and will replace them with Veneazuala, Cuba, Mexico and so on.Canada is also beinng distanced from the USA.

Obama will likely leave Japan hanging in the wind, just like he did with Poland, and will soon do with Taiwan, after his China visit.

Thanks - it’s been forty-five years, but I still have pleasant memories of Kadena - particularly when I flew out of it on the way home after eighteen months on the Rock.....

Bush and McCain gave us Obama - the LDP gave us Hatoyama .

I was never stationed on Okinawa but it was like a second home when I was on amphibs out of Sasebo. The first place we pulled into after we left Sasebo and the last we went before we got home.

I think you've nailed it. Okinawa has been a thorn in the Japanese side for decades. Hatoyama promised ‘change’ and we're gonna get it.

More equal relations? You bet!

Defend yourself - we’re going home. Oh, and if I were you I’d start looking around for some air defense capability. We’ve got some we can sell you - we’re not in range of the tested North Korea nukes.

How’s that for equal?

The Bushes destroyed Reagan’s legacy.

I loath them.

Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, who took office last month, has said he wants "more equal" relations with the United States and that he opposes plans to build a new US air base on the southern island of Okinawa...

If they were concerned about the credibility of US security guarantees (under Obama), how would pushing America away help them? Wouldn’t they do the exact opposite then?

I suspect their new government consists of the usual brand of leftist idiots who think that if you only distance yourself from the “imperialist” US and put on a happy smiley face, aggressors around the planet will suddenly start liking you and cancel all their evil activities. Their next step might be to unilaterally dissolve the Japanese army. Surely that will impress the Norks and show them who is the greatest peace-lover in the world!

Don’t forget that Japan just elected a leftest government. This is more about their own election. I’ll blame Obama also but this is more about Japan itself.
