Gotta love the carbon footprint of that bad boy!
I believe they would have been used for aiming the guns, calling the shots as it were, the corrections would have to be made by direction observation of the splashes and any dye patch left by the fall of the shells.
I was an artillery fire direction computer (charts and darts and then BUCS) years ago for an 8” bn and sometimes the FOs would use the term “splash” to indicate a correction round had impacted.
Artillery fire or rather accurate and fast artillery fire is/was a rather complicated process...lots of rapid computations involved, corrections for nearly everything you can think of doing it on a heaving sea when both the guns and the target are moving has to be even more complicated.
Most of the ships that participated in the Baker test were enveloped in a highly radioactive mist when the blast column collapsed. Decomtamination efforts at the time couldn't return them to safely usable condition.
Yep, 7.5 tons per the article.
Does anyone know where and when the ship is moored in NYC?
Nevermind. Found it!!!
USS NEW YORK has a special role in the war on terror.
Her bow, hardened by steel salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center, embodies the strength and determination of the people of New York not only to recover, but to take the fight to the enemy.
This formal ceremony will do more than honor the memory of those killed in the attacks. It will pay homage to those who survived, while building an enduring bond between the people of New York and the ship and her crew.
PLEASE NOTE: USS NEW YORK will be open for public visiting for several days during the ten day period when she will be in New York City, and those dates and times will be posted on the official commissioning website in October. However, because of extremely limited space, attendance at the commissioning ceremony will be by invitation only. Please return regularly to www.ussny.org for the latest information on visit dates and times.
The ship will be at Pier 88, at 48th Street and 12th Avenue, New York City.

Let me preface my comment by saying I know exactly why this ship looks like it does so there is no need for anyone to fill me in on that, but that being said...
This is one butt-ugly ship.
From forward aspects, yes, but it looks better from other angles.
Since this ship will carry the Navy’s most powerful weapons system (800 US Marines), I would say it looks like....
Death Incarnate.
But, that’s just me.
That’s terrific! It’s perfect that a piece of the old ‘New York’ is going to be on the new ship of the same name.
Yeah, but Death Incarnate is likely to BE butt-ugly, at least for those on whom it is visited. ;o)
