LatAm natives protest Spanish conquest's 'genocide'

Tens of thousands of indigenous people took to the streets across Latin America on Monday to protest the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's 1492 discovery of the Americas.

Columbus Day is celebrated as the Day of Hispanic Heritage in Latin America, but protesters marked the holiday as a reminder of the atrocities Spanish conquistadors wrought on indigenous people throughout the region.

In Guatemala City, 19-year-old demonstrator Imer Boror was killed and two were wounded as Maya Indians blocked entry points into the capital to protest their government's mining policies.

Protesters were marching on what they called the Day of Dignity and Resistance of the Indian People, protest leader Juana Mulul told AFP, saying the movement "is purely in defense of Mother Earth and our territory."

In a gesture toward reconciliation with indigenous groups, a special roundtable appointed by President Alvaro Colom after the incident was to meet with 14 poor farmers late Monday to discuss their demands.

You’d think people that upset would begin with giving up Spanish (or Portugese) as their first language.

Too many benefits tied to knowing that, I’ll bet!

Here’s the news from a newspaper in Guatemala. It is in Spanish, but it has a comment section: http://www.elperiodico.com.gt/es/20091012/portada/119328/. Quite entertaining.

The “mayan indians” are farmers from the countryside. A lot of people are asking who funded them. My gut feeling is that Chavez has some money in there, as it is usually the same communists farmer groups, leftist students from the state university, and union people.

This makes about as much sense as my family in Scotland protesting the Viking incursions of the eighth to eleventh centuries.

.....doing it, of course, in a language that is about one-third Old Norse.

They should taunt them in French, or in English, using an "outrageous accent-ah."

The natives protest the coming of Columbus, but Columbus and European culture beats the Mayan and Incan cultures hands down.

These peoples were cruel and terrifying. They cut open the heads of living babies as sacrifices to their gods. Their temples were made for all day human sacrifice-a-thons in which victims were beheaded from sun up to sun down, covering the temples with human blood.

These guys relished pulling fingernails out of captured enemies. They were what we used to call before multi-centralism “Evil.”

Sorry folks, but the truth is not only are the people of South American better, the entire planet and human history is WAY better off that these cultures are no more.

Just check out the film Apocalypto. Here is the end when the escaped sacrificial victim see the arrival of the Europeans.

Dear Indigenous Peoples,

Happy Columbus Day!

Please Google “Aztec Maya human sacrifice” and see what happens! Try also “Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin,” for a real treat!

Sincerely,

Your Fellow Indigenous Person of the Americas - Yes, I was born here, too! You just have more ancestors buried here. :-D

Do you suppose they want to go back to slaughtering people on pyramids? Or being slaughtered on pyramids. Which is it.

Its human, I suppose, to imagine that if history had worked out differently you might have been on top of the heap rather than on the bottom of it.

But you might have been on the bottom of an even nastier heap. And its all just day dreaming in the end. All you get is the life you’re living, to do what you can with it. Imagining what might have been if your grandfather had been a bigger shot than he was is a waste of perfectly good synapses.

Exactly.

I think one of the understated and even overlooked themes running through human history is the war, never quite named as such, against human ritual sacrifice.

It started with Abraham being told to substitute a beast for his son. This, in a world in which human sacrifice was as normal as breathing.

It finishes with Cortez hacking his way into Mexico City. He had his motives for what he did, but it occurs to me that there was a bigger game afoot than what he himself realized.

If it wasn’t for Western Civilization, the concept of “minority” or indigenous “rights” or women’s rights would not even exist. They would have no individual rights whatsoever and very little freedom. They should kiss Columbus’s feet for bringing over a superior philosophy of life.
