Soldier dies after receiving smoker's lungs in transplant (Socialist health care fail)

LONDON, England (CNN) -- A leading UK hospital has defended its practice of using organs donated by smokers after the death of a soldier who received the cancerous lungs of a heavy smoker.
Corporal Matthew Millington, 31, died at his home in 2008, less than a year after receiving a transplant that was supposed to save his life at Papworth Hospital -- the UK's largest specialist cardiothoracic hospital, in Cambridgeshire, east England.
Papworth Hospital released a statement saying using donor lungs from smokers was not "unusual."
The statement added that the hospital had no option but to use lungs from smokers as "the number of lung transplants carried out would have been significantly lower," if they didn't.

A good inspection of the lung would have revealed any pathology and thus rejection of the organ before the surgery even started.

Not necessarily. It could have been microscopic and would have been difficult to find just visually.

But odds are before cancer forms the lung would have had congestion, areas of tissue deaths, evidence of COPD, cysts etc. It isn’t like a smoker’s lung is 100% healthy except for a tumor.

Although the story does say that a radiographer failed to highlight a growth on the lungs. It does not say if the growth was noticed before the transplant. Very sad situation. Having lived in Britain, it sure seemed that lots more people, percentage wise, smoke than here is the USA.

Coming to a town near you, iffun's Obammy and his jackboots squeeze their manifesto in the back door. This is also one good reason why I'm not an organ donor. After the abuse I've put some of my anatomy through (I'll kinda let that dangle out there like bear bait), nobody in their right mind would want my giblets. A person could be terminally ill, and
still live longer if they avoided a transplant of any of my odds and ends. I've been a bad boy.
