A grandfather who beat cancer was wrongly told the disease had returned and left to die at a hospice which pioneered a controversial 'death pathway'.
Doctors said there was nothing more they could do for 76-year-old Jack Jones, and his family claim he was denied food, water and medication except painkillers. He died within two weeks.
But tests after his death found that his cancer had not come back, and he was in fact suffering from pneumonia brought on by a chest infection.
To his family's horror, they were told he could have recovered if he'd been given the correct treatment.
Today, after being given an £18,000 pay-out over her ordeal, his widow Pat branded his treatment 'barbaric' and accused the doctors of manslaughter.
Mr Jones was being cared at a hospice which was central to the contentious Liverpool Care Pathway under which dying patients have their life support taken away, although the hospice claims it wasn't officially applied in his case.
The scheme is now used by hundreds of hospitals and care homes, and is followed in as many as 20,000 deaths a year.
Supporters say it brings dignity to a patient's final hours, but critics fear that some are placed into it incorrectly.
The retired bricklayer was diagnosed with stomach cancer in May 2005. After undergoing chemotherapy, he had his stomach removed by surgeons at Royal Liverpool Hospital that September.

Dude, short of abortionists themselves, I don't know that there are any more evil people on the face of the earth than Hospice nurses.
We need squirrels! Eat up every ACORN in sight.
I hope he changed doctors.
Our own medical system has been infected with enough socialism that we now starve and dehydrate people to death all over the U.S. Take a look at my profile page for further info. Scroll down just past Terri Schiavo Blogs.
THere are many kinds of hospices. I was a volunteer with a hospice who did not practice or advocate killing people. Also helped a bit with another one similar. There are many varieties, and probably many are getting worse, since killing old and sick people is becoming so much more accepted.
Did you have a bad experience? Because we had nothing but excellence from our experience with Hospice.
You're a screaming lunatic. More evil than Kim Jong Il? Hitler? Stalin? Jeffrey Dahmer? Charles Manson?
You're a loonie.
Why does it not depend on what they consent to do?
What IS your major malfunction?
Quite true, a faithful Catholic or pro-life evangelical hospice would not sanction such evil things as Terricide.
Trouble is, there are a lot of hospices to whom even the Hippocratic Oath is a joke.
She was the rotation doctor at the hospital. His personal doctor was a kid he had in Sunday school class. He had a heart attack once at this doctor’s office (and tried to walk two blocks to the hospital). He had left his car in his doctor’s parking lot and his keys at the doctor’s office. The doctor met my wife and me outside his office on a Sunday to bring the keys so we could take his car home. How many doctors do you know who would do that?
Come on 2012.
I have been reading a lot about these UK NHS horror stories and they are horrific. It seems as if many of the doctors are totally incompetent. The staff is indifferent, and the hospitals are absolute sh*tholes. There are probably a lot of reasons for this and the NHS is at the center of them.
That said, readers would be advised to know that the UK also has a "private option" that provides excellent care, if you can pay for it.
Now for the real bad news to you, OB, and your countrymen. From what I have seen, the health care being proposed by the dems for you and yours is not along the lines of the much maligned Canadian model. It isn't even close to the horrific UK model. You should be so lucky. It is far closer to the pre WW II German model or the post WW II Soviet model.
My American friends on FR are in for a rude and painful shock if Obama and the gang are able to pull this off.
I certainly don’t think so. They hasten death. The belief that death can be “dignified” is false. The timing of death is God’s domain, not ours. I don’t think that all hospice workers are evil, but those that aren’t are ignorant.
The death cult we call the Left will just love doing this to human beings! They can so much expand their activism and efforts! Kill grandpa - it’s the kids choice.
Bump
The hospice nurses that took care of my father during the last weeks of his life were GREAT.
“”Hospice” is pure, unadulterated evil.
To look in the eyes of a Hospice nurse is to look in the eyes of Satan himself.”
I do not agree with this statement. My father had hospice care for the last two weeks of his life. The nurse was very compassionate and helped both my father and all of us family members.
I’ve heard of bad experiences with hospice, but I think those are still rare. My family has had nothing but the best experience with them.
