UAW Conceded No Base Pay, Health, or Pension Benefits in GM, Chrysler Bankruptcy

"Well-Kept Media Secret: UAW Conceded No Base Pay, Health, or Pension Benefits in GM, Chrysler Bankruptcy Run-ups"

A New York Times article by Nick Bunkley on Friday targeted for print on Saturday about the status of contract talks between Ford Motor Company and the United Auto Workers piqued my interest in a previously neglected but important matter.

Ford and the UAW are apparently close to an agreement. In describing what Ford workers are being asked to give up, Bunkley wrote the following (bolds are mine throughout this post):

Ford executives have said the company needs more concessions to keep G.M. and Chrysler from having an advantage.

.... The deal that U.A.W. workers at Ford approved in March got rid of cost-of-living pay increases and performance bonuses through 2010 and eliminated the jobs bank program, which allows laid-off workers to continue receiving most of their pay. In addition to those concessions, G.M. and Chrysler workers agreed to work-rule changes and a provision that bars them from striking.

What? From press coverage at the time, you would have thought that unionized GM and Chrysler workers made ginormous, humungous, unprecedented sacrifices to enable their companies to get through bankruptcy and to emerge as lean, mean vehicle-making machines.

Uh, no.

Locally - a brand new Saturn dealership was built less than a year ago. I was hoping Penske was going to buy it. A lot of their technology comes from Opel (GM Germany) but it is all up in the air on what happens to Opel/Vauxhall in Europe.

“Walter Reuther’s communist legacy comes homoe to roost.”

That’s true .. homo, and home to roost, at the same time = current America.

Hell, home to roast prob says a lot too.

It would make sense for Opel to buy Saturn and use that dealership network to enter the US market. VW and Mercedes may be preventing that in Germany to protect the Big Three in the USA market. I was hoping Penskle would save the Sky/Solstice/Opel. That was an interesting car and seemed to offer some hope for a sporty future. GM should have done Caddy as luxury, Pontiac (a clean new version) for performance, Chevy for ma & pa and GMC for trucks, SUVs and other stuff. Nope... Buick. Because they sell more Buicks in China than the USA and Buick is a big luxury name over there. So, more of the same from the Dinosaur...

“Its all about pension and benefits now “

Hell I saw them all on video drinking three days in a row during work hours at the local bar.

Hang out a sign that says Cheat Us and this is what you get - cheats.

Can’t make much in the way of cars if they aren’t even there to work.

Saturn is closing. However, we do sell Mitsubishi which is real junk. I’m actively looking for employment.
GM made tons of gross profit off of SUV’s but the SUV markey has steadily declined. Minivans are all but non-existent too. GM needs to re-evaluate quality and the needs of the american consumer. Its a shame to see what has happened to GM. The Saturn Aura, Outlook, SkyN and Vue are all great cars with a huge female customer base.

"Competition means that the loser will do something about it (hopefully) to earn the business back. "

With the USG as major shareholder, and the unions as major support of that USG; "doing something" means increasing tariffs, lowering the value of the dollar, mandating obscure features and technology, adding new baggage onto the single US hold out, and probably donating tax dollars to GM/Chrysler rebate programs.

Add theft to the auto company’s headaches. Employee theft.

When I hear these guys are losing their jobs I think, “well, now might be the time to sell all those tools you ripped off from work for the last 15 years” They have their garage walls lined with Ford Motor Company tools. I guess it is one of the benefits....
