New York Woman, 38, in 'Top Shape' Before Sweat Lodge Death
Foxnews ^

NEW YORK CITY — A 38-year-old New York woman who died after sitting in a sauna-like sweat lodge during a spiritual cleansing ceremony at an Arizona resort was an active athlete — an avid surfer and hiker who was "in top shape," took self-improvement seriously and had a passion for art — a family spokesman said.

Kirby Brown of Westtown, N.Y., was one of two people who died Thursday evening at a scenic resort. Authorities identified the other victim as 40-year-old James Shore of Milwaukee, who served as director of business development at an Internet marketing company in his hometown.

That two people died and 19 others became ill at the Angel Valley Retreat Center indicates that "something went horribly wrong," according to Brown's family.

Nineteen other people were taken to hospitals, suffering from burns, dehydration, respiratory arrest, kidney failure or elevated body temperature. Most were soon released, but one remained in critical condition Saturday.

Brown had no pre-existing health conditions that would have kept her from participating in an otherwise safe activity, said cousin and family spokesman Tom McFeeley.

"Our only thought is shock, sadness and surprise," McFeeley said. "There will be plenty of time to react to the truth of what happened here, but we believe it is pointless to be angry or to place blame or to make assumptions before we understand what occurred here."

a five-day “Spiritual Warrior” retreat that promised to “absolutely change your life.”

The people at Ray’s retreat, whose ages ranged from 30 to the 60s, paid between $9,000 and $10,000 to attend.

THAT’S the way to do it !

Has there been any public account of how long they were inside the sweat logdge exposed to high heat?

The sweat lodge was just a small foretaste of the eternal heat that will be felt by new agers.

Admittedly, having no medical expertise, I still have a feeling there was something amiss at this facility.

Is there a Bad Engineering Hall of Fame?

In addition to heat strokes, a story earlier today suggested those tarps could have released toxins into the air.

There’s a serious industry around here of milking wealthy dilletantes. Ordinarily though, they are allowed to escape with their lives.

I hate self improvement and plan to stumble into the afterlife as the door closes with a cigar in one hand and a beer in the other shouting “WoooHoooo! What a ride!”

Don’t you think if people had begun to feel strange they would have exited the tent? Could fasting for 36 hours before hand have had something to do with the fact that they didn’t realize something was wrong?

Somebody was extremely negligent in permitting people to be in a sauna for extended periods of time.

They built the sweat lodge...wonder if they used some sort of pressure treated lumber (the kind that’s treated with CCA and contains arsenic)?

I’ve got it.

“Between 55 and 65 people were crowded into the 415-square-foot space during a two-hour period that included various spiritual exercises led by Ray, Waugh said. Every 15 minutes, a flap was raised to allow more volcanic rocks the size of cantaloupes to be brought inside.”

TWO HOURS!! These people died because of lack of oxygen and too high of temps. People who’ve fallen asleep in saunas have died from having their brains cooked.

Ray is in a lot of trouble and he knows it. That is why he fled the state.

Yep. The idiots who decided to sit in there for that amount of time. Death by stupidity.

Something went terribly wrong over there. These sweat boxes have been in use for some time. It’s very strange to have an incident like this.

Partly their own fault. Then again, how many had experience with saunas? Part of the blame is attributable to the event organizers who should have had somebody monitoring.

Agreed.

When I was in the Navy a sailor died in a sauna. The temp was high and she fell asleep. After that occurred the Command was very keen that everyone be aware to limit time spent in saunas.

Since I never use saunas I don’t remember exactly the recommended time limit.

Sounds like the Doctor Kavorkian Spiritual retreat. People are dying to participate... or perhaps just participating to die.

Somebody’s ass is in serous jeopardy at this moment, as well it should be.

Vaguely recall reading that the crystals and vortex thing is another biggie in Sedona. The Maya fetish is another one for New Agers, thought recent anthropology posits that the Mayans may have been violent cannibals and human sacrificers.

Here’s a “curriculum” from this place:
