Mary Cheney pregnant with second child
True Slant ^ | 10/06/2009 | Kate Klonick

Posted on 10/06/2009 6:17:42 PM PDT by DesertRenegade

Mary Cheney, the former vice president’s daughter, and her long-time partner, Heather Poe, are expecting their second child, a source close to the family told True/Slant. [Ed. Note: Since publishing this piece, Cheney has confirmed that she and Poe are expecting their second child in mid- to late November.]

Cheney has worked as a principal at Navigators Global, a bi-partisan communications firm, but recently announced that she would be leaving the company for maternity leave and to begin a new consulting firm with her sister, Liz. Close friends were informed that she was expecting a second child about four months ago and she is now visibly showing her pregnancy, the source says.

Cheney, a lesbian, attracted much attention from the conservative movement when she announced she was pregnant with her first child in late 2006. Social conservative pundit and founder of Focus on the Family, James Dobson, penned a controversial op-ed for Time magazine called “Two Mommies Is One Too Many,” opining Cheney’s decision to start a family:

"With all due respect to Cheney and her partner, Heather Poe, the majority of more than 30 years of social-science evidence indicates that children do best on every measure of well-being when raised by their married mother and father. That is not to say Cheney and Poe will not love their child. But love alone is not enough to guarantee healthy growth and development. The two most loving women in the world cannot provide a daddy for a little boy–any more than the two most loving men can be complete role models for a little girl."

In your business, I’m sure you have heard all kinds of problems from all kinds of people. Hairdressers and bartenders often turn out to be more helpful than psychologists and psychiatrists in letting people air their deepest concerns, without passing judgment. Good for you!

I happen to know the next-door neighbors of Mary Cheney and her partner. They vouch that these women are wonderful neighbors. (This was when they lived in Colorado.) They were always so kind to the neighborhood children, and were model property owners.

I think Lynn and Dick are wonderful to welcome all their grandchildren equally, and to love them without reservation.

Some FReepers need to get a life and stop being idle gossips.

I googled their images to see what Heather Poe looked like. Mary is the fem of the couple methinks, but I wouldn’t want to get into a fight with either.

I think you are overreacting I have been called a lot worse on my time on internet message boards. I would rate some of my comments being called bizarre as about a one on a one to ten scale. However it was not my intention to drive you off FR so I withdraw the offending two words making my remark...

If the child is a boy shouldn’t he be named after the father, Master Baster?

Sorry, just that the family is no longer a man and wife thing. How is that changey thing goin’ for ya’?

It WOULD be none of our business....if it affected only THEM. But when WE have to PAY to take care of their maladjusted child’s crime sprees, or other social dysfunction, then it is OUR business.

And what about the father? After all, it was with his full consent that he was cut out of his child’s life. I don’t understand men who do that. How is it that they can know they have a child out there and not care?

Biggest thing to me is the playing with the language they do to portray themselves as having a natural relationship (but note here the writer of the story said that & it's not certain the couple would have said it the same way), the two of them expecting a child as you say, and so forth.

One of them is expecting the child, the other is perhaps going to help raise the child. Not intending to diminish that particular role, but it is what it is.

And it's fine. They can do that if the (at least) three parties involved have agreed to do so. Just don't pretend it's something other than what it is and dilute the understanding of the basics.

I think the statements being made here are appalling. I would rather see a child raised by two women who love each other and will provide well for a child and raise the child in a loving home. The idea that every home with two “traditional” parents is perfect by comparison and doesn’t ever produce maladjusted children due to abusive, neglectful or bad parenting is simple ignorance.

The idea that because they are lesbians they are therefore going to indoctrinate the child into “their way of life” begs the question: then why didn’t Dick Cheney’s traditional marriage serve to prevent his daughter from being born and living as a lesbian? Because: people are who they are.

It’s time to love and let love, people. There are bigger problems in the world, and hate, ignorance and intolerance is not the way.

Based on the unfortunate facts about same-sex couples, that is very unlikely to be the outcome.

Also, you should read up on research into the effects of growing up in a fatherless home. A second "mommie" doesn't make up for the lack of a daddy.

Guess not. But it’s that touchyfeelyhopeychangie’s first and only post - a hit & run. And probably not worth the effort.
