The big question on the domestic front right now is whether President Obama understands the gravity of the employment crisis facing the country. Does he get it? The signals coming out of the White House have not been encouraging.
The Beltway crowd and the Einsteins of high finance who never saw this economic collapse coming are now telling us with their usual breezy arrogance that the Great Recession is probably over. Their focus, of course, is on data, abstractions like the gross domestic product, not the continued suffering of living, breathing human beings struggling with the nightmare of joblessness.
Even Mr. Obama, in an interview with The Times, gave short shrift to the idea of an additional economic stimulus package, telling John Harwood a few weeks ago that the economy had likely turned a corner. As you know, the president said, jobs tend to be a lagging indicator; they come last.
The view of most American families is somewhat less blasé. Faced with the relentless monthly costs of housing, transportation, food, clothing, education and so forth, they have precious little time to wait for this lagging indicator to come creeping across the finish line.
Americans need jobs now, and if the economy on its own...

But when asked who had been helped most by government stimulus efforts, substantial majorities said large banks and Wall Street investment companies.

The master in this area, of course, was Franklin Roosevelt. His first Inaugural Address was famous for the phrase: The only thing we have to fear. ... But he also said in that speech: Our greatest primary task is to put people to work. And he said the country should treat that task as we would treat the emergency of a war.
Now thats the sense of urgency we need.

Another financial crash by 4/2010 IMO.
He “gets it”. Just working thru the inputs for the next crisis that will need to be solved.... in his special way.
Bob Herbert knew going into this that Obama is a “community organizer.” “Community organizers” consume resources that are produced by others and either donated to or extorted by that organization. They produce nothing. He has no accomplishments. He has no experience doing anything else. He has never been an employer. His friends and associates are marxists. How in the world could he be expected to take over from the free market and manage a mature economy as large and complex as ours? What’s that you say Mr. Herbert?
Does Obama get it? Sure he does, the bigger question should be..Do the fumduckers who voted for this jr. senator get it?
What a silly question.
Ordinary Democrats believe that milk, eggs, meat, vegetables, and fruit are created in the backrooms of supermarkets, just like the baked goods. No need to kill or abuse animals for any of that stuff.
Obama-type Democrats believe things that are even more stupid. For a clear-cut example, see Zimbawbwe under Mugabe.
Until those in DC are jobless and standing in the middle of an angry jobless mob they won’t get it...
thank you ... you nailed it.
Hey Bobbie....oh, he GETS it....he wants as many crisis as possible....it’s the Cloward-Piven stategy to bring down the country.
Does Herbert get it? Does the NYT get it?
They are staunch defenders of the Obama socialistic revolution.
I’m very, very surprised to read something like this coming from Bob Herbert.
No, Bob, Obama doesn’t get it. He’s a privileged millionaire, who has never had to do a real day’s work in his life, and now he has trillions of dollars at his disposal, Air Force One to take him wherever he likes, and he can do whatever he likes to amuse himself. Maybe fly in a pizza for dinner or go to Copenhagen for a change of scene.
Or he can kick all the military off their golf course and enjoy a leisurely round or two. What does he care about working stiffs?
But get with the program, Bob. You aren’t supposed to say things like this about your Lord and Master. It’s a historic first to have a black man in the White House. The bad economy is Bush’s fault, don’t you know?
We have relatives back in Ohio and Michigan that we visit several times a year and people here have no ideas. Row after row of unsold homes, people are either without jobs, taking furloughs, or are soon to be laid off. I get sooooo mad.
And all they can argue about in Washington is raising more taxes. The tea parties are only beginning. I don't think they understand the situation. In a way it's like the French Revolution.
Putting people to work is obviously not Obama's primary task. If it were, he would have given that stimulus money to small businesses instead of Wall Street. Small businesses employ 80% of all workers. And unemployment numbers do not even include small business employees who have been laid off. What is the true unemployment number, after adding in that segment?
Tell me about it! Things are bleak here in Ohio. Every week we hear about more and more palces laying off or out of buisness. So far my family has been untouched but who knows how long that will last?
Have you noticed the only area of job growth is with government? That was no accident.

He gets it, or rather, “Whitey” gets it. This is payback.
I’m absolutely convinced that 0 is following the Cloward-Piven strategy. Events, 0’s history, his advisers, and his czar selection fit the model too closely to be mere coincidence. He is a filthy anti-American traitor who is well on his way to destroying this country and has gotten away with it under the protective cloak of race.
Incurring massive debt obligations with compounding interest - extracted from highly productive sectors that accelerate and multiply cash flow - distributing to inefficient, wasteful, and arduously slow distribution channels that produce temporary employment benefits for unskilled illegal alien labor - all funded by Chinese communists who grow their power and influence disproportionately stronger.
