THE KILLING OF MICHAEL MALLOY
Trivia Library ^ | Historical | Irving Wallace

Posted on 10/06/2009 8:44:22 AM PDT by parsifal

He was--at least up to a point--the most durable human being in American history, possibly in world history. Over 30 attempts were made to murder him. He survived them all. He was truly incredible. His name was Michael Malloy, and he was a bleary-eyed, unsteady diminutive Irishman originally from County Donegal. While his insurance policy would later falsely give his age as 45, he was actually 60 years old. Once, in better times, he had been a fireman, but now in 1933 his almost full-time occupation was alcoholic.

A story from one of the People's Almanac books. I found it online. It probably has something to do with the financial meltdown and the practice of side bets on Wall Street.

parsy, who found this story fascinating

Oh I thought they meant the radio guy Mike Malloy, who is such an buttplug that I definitely could see people taking a potshot or two at.

Great story . . . sort of like the health care bill. Every time we think it’s dead, it shows up up the next day, battered but emboldened.

When I saw the slug on this thread, I thought it was about the leftist dork radio host with the same name.

Not that I wish him any harm.

Interesting story. Especially interesting is the short time between the deed, the trial, and the executions. We need to bring that back; no more 20 yrs on death row.

Interesting read. (Although, I had a heck of a time finding part two. Could they have made the printing in the link any smaller? LOL) Thanks for posting.

Yep. Four electrocutions out of four living perps. I’d say they were batting 1000. Plus, the savings on imprisoning someone for life, which is currently in the $30,000-$40,000 range per year, I think.

parsy, who thinks we need some reform in penal stuff

Cool, parsy! I adore trivia—not necessarily gruesome trivia, but still!

My last name is Malloy. I hope I’m 1/2 as tough as this guy.

Same here. Light blue color, small font, c’mon! Some of us are over 12! : )

I usually include web design evaluation as part of my research methods course. All I could think when I saw the link was I’d be all over that in class as an example of what not to do.

Can’t believe he survived anti-freeze. But I read somewhere Bela Lugosi was so bad an alcoholic he was drinking formaldehyde to get a buzz.

parsy, who knows it is hard to believe

Right, really bad choice of font size and color. I almost gave up, but my interest was piqued and I really wanted to read the rest of the story.
