'Meatless Monday' in city schools earn kudos from PETA (Baltimore)
Baltimore Sun ^ | 10/6/2009 | Laura Vozzella

An animal rights group has declared Baltimore schools the "Most Progressive Public School District of 2009" for going vegetarian in school cafeterias once a week. The "Meatless Monday" menu that Baltimore City Public Schools adopted this school year earned it a "Proggy Award" from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. "Proggy" is PETA shorthand for "progress." Tapping into a national campaign, the "Meatless Monday" program is intended to make lunches more healthful, stretch the district's food budget and raise awareness about the environmental impact of large-scale meat production, Tony Geraci, the district's food and nutrition director, has said. The district, which offers meat products the rest of the school week, has not promoted the program as a way to save animals. But PETA appreciates the gesture just the same. "By adopting 'Meatless Mondays,' Mr. Geraci is helping students develop healthy eating habits and saving animals' lives at the same time," PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk said in a prepared statement. "Baltimore should be proud that its schools are considering how our food choices affect us - as well as the world around us."

I’ll stick with my meatless Fridays for higher reasons.

>>> “Proggy” is PETA shorthand for “progress.” <<<<

Sounds like something right out of Orwell’s 1984.

Which is fitting from the sadistic PETA, whose “ethical treatment of animals” includes killing abandoned dogs in the back of minivans, then throwing their bodies into random dumpsters.

“Proggy,” indeed.

I can’t imagine the “meat” in a Baltimore school cafeteria is anything you’d actually want to eat.

I never once ate in the school lunch room when I was a kid nor did I carry my lunch. My siblings and I always walked home for lunch rain or shine. We had rain coats and boots and umbrellas and lived about a dozen blocks from school.

If memory serves me we had an hour off for lunch.

Do any school kids do this any more?

Meatball Monday

Beef Tip Tuesday

Western Meat Loaf Wednesday

T-Bone Thursday

Fried Chicken Friday

I want Shrimp Day at schools. Not those huge jumbo shrimp. No, the little salad shrimp so even more animals can understand what man's dominion over them means....bwahahahaha, bwahahahaha!

And Maryland was the Catholic colony, too. I'd rather see meatless Fridays, but memories of frozen fish filets every Friday...I now stick with PB&J.

I would force the cafeteria to produce at least one of these a week:

The Meat Ship

I think the point of this (and there was an article in the Sun about it early Sept.) was simply to be “healthier”.

NOT to save animals. Trust me, Baltimore citizens couldn’t care less about saving animals.

It’s like the whole “Green” thing. What is suggested in a cultist, religious way of “saving the earth” is in fact what most people would do for self-interest - to save money.

Screw the earth. It’s not a god. It’s what should be done just for efficiency’s sake.
