Ft Sam Houston is a very nice post. My daughter trained there as a Combat Medic in 2004. (She is a Reservist - and went on to get her BS Nursing, and is a 1Lt, Nurse Corp now - just went on 1 year active duty at Madigan Hospital, next to Ft. Lewis, WA).

We went to her AIT graduation, and stayed on post. They have wonderful old buildings that were nicely restored! (And near the field where some initial flight tests for the Army were conducted circa 1910.)

When i first got to SA in the mid sixties, coming from the east coast, I didn't know a taco from an enchilada, a tortilla from a frijole, but I sure soon learned about all that good food, and SA in those days was a great place to learn Tex-Mex. In the mid Sixties, you did not go NEAR the San Antonio River, unless you wanted your throat slit. Hemisfair construction is what got the Riverwalk going, and look at it now. My wife, who was working for the army up in Mineral Wells when we got married in "68, transferred to Fourth Army Headquarters at Fort Sam. Fourth Army "disolved" in mid 71 as Fifth Army came from Illinois (and the brass loved that move). Fifth Army HQ still...Fort Sam Houston..San Antonio, Texas.
