Since first invading Afghanistan nearly a decade ago, America set one primary goal: Eliminate al Qaeda's safe haven.
Today, intelligence and military officials say they've severely constrained al Qaeda's ability to operate there and in Pakistan -- and that's reshaping the debate over U.S. strategy in the region.

A key point of contention in President Barack Obama's review of war strategy is the ability of al Qaeda to reconstitute in Afghanistan.

Too bad for those Afgan's that supported the US, their life expectancy just went down a few years when the Taliban returns. And if will take a while before al Qaeda is reconstituted sufficient to hurt the west, but it is inevitable.

Don’t forget the mantra...8 year war, 8 year war, 8 year war. That is the new subliminal talking point of the left.
With our current political makeup, I can’t for the life of me understand why any country would trust us to keep our promises. One administration signs an agreement or treaty, and the next one comes along and abandons it all in pursuit of their own political ends.
It’s a sorry way to run a country, but in reality, it’s more like two completely different countries—the Democrats and Republicans have very little in common. One day, I suspect conservatives will do actual battle with liberals—I shudder to think of it, but I suspect it will happen.
Remember when Clinton said we would be in Bosnia for just 1 year...
save our troops...
Agreed. The issue for me is not al-Qaeda, per se’, but that the Dems will seriously seek the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan. If they succeed, the Taliban, with the aid of al-Qaeda, will retake Afghanistan and turn it into the next Islamic state from where al-Qaeda will reconstitute.
During the campaign, the democrat mantra was:
“We must get Bin Laden. Bush has failed to get Bin Laden.”
Now the democrats have adopted the republican position that AQ has been contained. Except the democrats are using it as an excuse for their indecision rather than as a comment on progress.
Obama is a moral and physical coward.

McGeneral called him out, Bam was not happy. It must be pretty bad for McCrystal to criticize Bam in public. Either McCrystal goofed badly (unlikely) or Bam/Gates/etal were ignoring the issues.
But Bam has just not had enough time to get to this issue ... too busy flying to Copenhagen to make speeches about the greatness of he and Michelle and Chicago.
Not sure where he takes this. How can he agree that McCrystal is correct now and move forward with Surge #2?

I don't understand. A little while ago it was,
What's changed?
