"Anyway, when did the left learn to like competition so much?"

The left hates fair competition. Thus the left begat ACORN and affirmative action.

especially one with such a strong moral compass.

*eyeroll*

"America bad / America hsters good" is not a moral compass.

When the title contains the phrase “New York Times”, a “Barf Alert” is redundant.

This whole Olympics bid was a Chicago Machine scam.

They hoped to win in order to line the pockets of the Chicago crime syndicate, period.

Is a “moral compass” something you have in lieu of morals? This week Harvey Weinstein said that Hollywood had a very strong moral compass in defense of their coming to the aid of Roman Polanski. I guess you either have morals or you need a moral compass to try to find them. If you have a strong moral compass, it means you are very far off and need a lot of help to find morals.

Brilliant!!!

Mr. Obama has done important, courageous things to restore America’s standing. After George W. Bush, it feels good — and safer — to know that people around the world feel better about this country and about this president.

We like having an articulate, fiercely competitive president, especially one with such a strong moral compass.

Major barf alert! I really wish I wouldn't have clicked on that article and read as far as I did. The NY Times is completely delusional!

The US has hosted eight Olympic Games within a one hundred year period. Sending Obama and the thick sisters to muscle the IOC makes the US look greedy.

This smells as if it were written by Mo Dowd. But she does not dare put her name on it. She drew the short straw on this one.

I haven't read this quote in very many places; it was in a McClatchy story. Other accounts of his speeches don't mention it:

Obama attempted to ease concerns about poor U.S. treatment of some foreigners in the post-9/11 era, saying that "one of the legacies I want to see coming out of Chicago 2016 hosting of the games is a reminder that America at its best is open to the world."

"We look like the world. . . . Over the last several years sometimes that fundamental truth about the United States has been lost. And one of the legacies, I think, of this Olympics Games in Chicago would be a restoration of that understanding of what the United States is all about."

Even when trying to get the Olympics, the theme has to be America has been so bad, but now I'm fixing it. And I think the whole theme of his speech of "I love Chicago, that's where I live, so you should pick it" was absurd.

Thanks for posting that information.

I had not seen those comments anywhere.

We're already 'open to the world', Zero...been to the US/Mexico border lately?

“We like having an articulate, fiercely competitive president, especially one with such a strong moral compass.”

So do conservatives. In fact, we wish we had a president like that right now.

Perhaps after the long Obama Nightmare is over the country will have enough sense to elect a president with these qualities.

"A mild slap on the wrist from the New York Times...."

The NYSlimes can afford a meaningless "slap on the wrist" to look "fair and balanced" because no one gives a rat's patootie about this Olympic soap oprah being a grave issue.

A grave issue is Afghanistan, unemployment, recession, socialized health care and Michelle's public wardrobe.

The Slimes writers should aim their limp wrists at Obama's wrists on the grave issues of our time and spare us their phony editorials "chiding" their superhero.

That's really an amazing editorial.

They're clearly stating that they thought he should only have gone if he knew the fix was in. That way he could have gone to take some credit for the previously done-deal that others put together. He could pretend that his support put the bid over the top. A spin the NY Times would have trumpeted from their front page. They probably already had the article written.

They're disappointed in him and his team for not being efficiently disingenous and phoney.

No wonder that vapid and deceitful newspaper is in the crapper. And it's no wonder that they can see a "strong moral compass" in Obama.

Ironic in that the primary reason the left hates George W. Bush is that he DOES have morals and a strong understanding of moral absolutes.

And safer?? Doesn't this author know that the whole world is laughing at his Messiah?

Delusional is an understatement!
