As the US president flew home from Copenhagen, his unsuccessful attempt to convince the International Olympic Committee to choose his adopted home city was widely seen as a blow to his credibility.
Joined by his wife, Mr Obama gave an impassioned presentation the first by a US president on behalf of a city bidding for the games in which he hailed Chicago as "the most American of American cities".
There had been widespread expectations in the US that the president's star power would prove all-conquering, so there was shock when Chicago was the first city to be eliminated.
Instead of being able to celebrate another Obama success, the White House was forced to fend off accusations that the president had taken a political body blow.
...
The Obamas' appearance in Copenhagen was the culmination of several weeks of campaigning on Chicago's behalf.
As well as personally calling heads of state or lobbying them at the United Nations and G20 summits, the president recorded five pro-Chicago video messages, set up a special office at the White House and hosted Olympic athletes on the lawn, even fencing with a toy light sabre.

yet another embarassing situation the obamas keep doing.
In this version, the bold text is new to me. The way portrayed was Obama’s efforts were a last minute strategy, unless I misinterpreted.
I am not surprised we did not hear about the videos.
But the lobbying of heads of state?
1. Did he think their kind words guaranteed a victory, which is why he went to Copenhagen?
2. Shouldn’t he rather been sucking up to IOC voters with personal calls?
Bush’s fault.
I think I know where Barry went wrong. Duing his speech he told the IOC that he wanted to bring the Olympics back to his “hometown.” The IOC thought he meant Mombassa Kenya.
The operative word is “failed”.
Chicago might have stood a chance if it weren’t Obama’s home town.
I’m sure Skippy will pass on some of the blame to Aunt Esther and Okra.
“...so there was shock when Chicago was the first city to be eliminated. “
That was schweeeeet!
I was laughing so hard!!!
The IOC knows a phoney when they see one. The lobbying was buttkissing which apparently did not go over well.
That's where he screwed up, then.
He's been going on and on about how he's a "citizen of the world", about how America isn't exceptional, and is guilty of treating the rest of the world like a conquering imperialist empire, and now he wants to pimp his own hood as being "the most American of American cities"?
Can't have it both ways, Bozo.
I’m watching Michele and Barack on cspan! Michele was pretty bad.
These two are so self absorbed and sophmoric.
Yee.
I think chicago was filler. To flesh out the field and make it look like a real competition.
The Olympics is an mal of the genus “Televisionus” and Rio has it all over Chicago.
This is when the Narcissist in Chief finally learned that not all of the world considers him to be The One.
Probably they were put aside when it was found they wouldn't play.
I got you at #16.
Funny!
The long and short of it is the corrupt IOC knew they weren’t gonna command the usual fee from more accomplished players.
THAT’S why they were immediately eliminated.
It doesn’t pay to play ‘pay to play’ with those better at it than you.
Chicago should be so proud.
