Panama agrees to host two U.S. naval bases
MEXICO, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - Panama will sign before October 2009 a treaty with the United States on the opening of two U.S. naval bases on its territory, a senior Panamanian government official said on Sunday. According to Panama's La Prensa newspaper, a preliminary agreement was reached between Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during recent talks in New York. "The U.S. and Panama will sign before October 30 an agreement on the deployment of two naval bases on the pacific coast of our country to fight international drug-trafficking," said Minister of Government and Justice Jose Raul Mulino.

Finally we are doing something right? Not good news for the Red Chinese though.
Why do I get the feeling that “the One” will announce some major deal with Cuba where we are giving back Gitmo and moving to Panama.
We used to own it until Carter. Now we will have to rent land and space and give technology to the Chinese that own the place.
I’d like to see the Naval bases reopened in the Philippines. The Navy should be returned to “The P.I.”!!!
Location, location, location.
Way back when, Jimmy Carter turned the Panama Canal Zone and the canal over to the Panamanians. I don’t say “back over,” because there was no Panama before WE built the Panama Canal. That real estate belonged to Colombia. I remember reading at the time, and discussing in school, how Carter’s generosity would affect Panama, now that they were “free,” and someone pointed out they were losing billions of dollars of U.S. aid by taking control. So here we come, full circle. The Panamanians want us back because they can’t afford to defend themselves, and because they now really, really appreciate the dollars that U.S. military installations bring to their country. I wish someone would report how much it cost us to withdraw, strategically, from Panama in the first place.
My Fil sis-in-law was there when Mt Pinatubo erupted, and at the same time the previous govt didn’t want the bases operating. There’s a saying that the reason why the US left Pampanga/Subic was not because of the limp-wristed RP govt was because Pinatubo drove them away. Due to the large amount of ash that fell on half the world, it was a logistical disaster to clean up the bases.
I don’t see you as being paranoid at all. I think he is setting up to take it and other places over. Plus creating a place where he can set up his black panther gestapo in Latin America.
That’s false. The decision for our Naval bases to leave the Philippines was made in advance (a couple years so) of Mt. Pinatubo. I was there when it happened and by the time Mt. Pinatubo erupted (June 15, 1991) we had already closed many smaller bases. Being stationed in the Philippines was my favorite location while in the Navy and if the bases were still there, I might just move there.
Does Emperor Obie know about this? Who authorized this? He is going to be ticked.
bump
Take that, Hugo!
I was at Subic 2 years ago when my brother got married. Drove there with another cousin and it’s a yuppie’s paradise...condos mixed within an economic zone. Retiring there would also be a good idea. I never thought I could quit driving in the RP..damn, they’re crazy in Metro Manila. I almost had heart attacks in the city and I’m not even 30. It’s only when I got to outside of the MM on the highways that I breathed easily, and I’m from L.A.

It’s called heading them off at the pass.
...for the other shoe to drop.
I never hear good news out of this administration thinking it’s all a plus. Something negative will come of this.
In truth, I suppose a naval base just above South America is a good thing. It sure sends a message to China with regard to the safety of the Canal.
I’m glad to hear that Subic is doing good.
I was last in the Philippines in 1994 - my wife is from the Philippines!
I love the place!
