Roman Polanski: 'Everyone else fancies little girls too'

I reread an extraordinary interview Polanski gave to the novelist Martin Amis in 1979, the year after Polanski went on the run.

The interview originally appeared in Tatler and is collected in Amis’s excellent book Visiting Mrs Nabokov. Here’s a section of the first quote it contains from Polanski.

“If I had killed somebody, it wouldn’t have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But… f—ing, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to f— young girls. Juries want to f— young girls. Everyone wants to f— young girls!”

Thirty years have passed since Polanski said those words, so he’s had time to reconsider them. Whether he’s actually done so, we don’t yet know. Perhaps he still thinks it’s true that everyone fancies little girls, and that the press was exaggerating the enormity of his crime, and that all this somehow excuses his behaviour.

Later in the interview, Polanski says he likes Paris, to which he’d fled, because it’s “very grown-up”.

Unlike the 13-year-old girl with whom he admitted having unlawful sex.

Why should any of this suprise anybody, the objectification of women came in the with the 60’s sexual revolution and feminism and has only gained ground since. Satan is winning if you keep score using man’s scoring system.

Wow, reading that transcript was interesting. The cop who executed the search warrant and found the photos and drugs was Phillip Vannatter - who was later famous as one of the four cops who searched OJs house on the night of the murder.

Being a cop in LA must be bizarre.

A lot of people see a young, attractive woman walk down the street and look at her. I do it. But if someone said “dude, she’s only 16” it would change my thought patterns completely.

I was in my early twenties, when one day I was walking into a grocery store behind a fine looking woman. I worked my way to be in front of her to check out the other side, to my utter shock she couldn't have been a day under 80 years old, I know what you mean about those thought patterns changing.

I guess after the end of Chuck Heston era it has been downwhill. Anymore the only actors I like are mainly non-Americans like Crowe (married), Oldman (married) and Christian Bale (married).

Bale is a hot head but he screamed at his very liberal step mother Gloria Steinem when she was spewing her femnist crap at dinner. Bale screamed “would someone shut this woman up!”

Oldman was furious when he was punked by directors in that film where he play a Repub Senator. They were making a statement and he was very angry about it.

Legally, yes.

But if 13 y/os are not sexually attractive as everyone is proclaiming, then why would anyone of any age have sex with them unless he is a pervert? You are saying that 17 y/os are perverts but it is okay to be a 17 y/o pervert but not after 18. If you are excusing the 17 y/o then you are saying that it is not the sex that was harmful but the age of the 43 y/o partner. But that is absurd because it is perfectly normal to have sex with a 43 y/o but illegal to have sex with a 17 y/o. You are saying that a 13 y/o can consent to sex, just not with anyone else who can consent to sex, i.e. two wrongs make a right. I can probably think of ten more absurdities that arise from your two statements.

Good actor. Huge ratings and pretty much he can ask whatever he wants. I think he likes to play the piano too.

I liked him in Jeeves and Wooster with his homo friend Stephen Fry. They were also in Black Adder with Rowan Atkinson which was okay.

Pretty much most of the non-American actors keep their mouth shut about politics.

TV is a wasteland. 99.5% of it is garbage.
