Most people think they pay too much to Uncle Sam, but for some people it simply is not true.
In 2009, roughly 47% of households, or 71 million, will not owe any federal income tax, according to estimates by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

In the old days, we had property requirements for the vote, which was deemed harsh. Now, we've gone far in the other direction, with a growing voter bloc that has no skin in the game of government.
The article says that the number was roughly 38% a year ago. If it gets well over 50%, its asking a lot of the voting majority to vote against their own purse to promote governmental fiscal sanity. I need hardly add that recent policy seems hell bent on increasing this number on the backs of those that are the most productive.
Everybody should have to pay at least a dollar.
That being the case they either should not vote or they should owe some sort of community service in lieu of taxes.
This has obviously been the goal of the liberals and big government republicans. If over half the voting public doesn’t pay taxes, then you’re guaranteed to win elections for life.
I would like to find out what those figures were before welfare?
Everybody should have to pay the same percentage. I’m damn tired of giving 40% of my income to a government that doesn’t do dick for me.
There are now more of the non-producing than there are producing in America.
Not just the poor, but the lower middle class pays little in income tax, even though a large number are employed by the local government. Depending on what state they live in, however, they do get hit with property taxes.
I’m not sure thats new news - I think Rush has been saying that with charts for quite some time. Personally, I don’t know anyone including my children who pays no tax.
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life. -Theodore Roosevelt
I should have added that buried in the depths of the article is a lower 24% number when you include the effect of tax with-holding. In other words, a good number of people get tax refunds, but pay net taxes.
It is still a large number. Further, its been my experience that people don't think of withholding taxes the same way they think of out-of-pocket taxes. I think that one of the best reforms we could make would be to simply eliminate tax withholding. Let people hold the money for a while, then send them the bill to pay their taxes--monthly, quarterly, whatever. Self-employed people have to pay quarterly estimated taxes. If everyone operated that way, they'd see the true cost of government, and feel a lot differently.
It's not breaking news, but its worth revisiting, especially when a purported actual number is released.
No, we get reamed Polanski-style (every way possible).
I guess I’m missing something... The wife and I are on SS and we draw a small pension from our IRA. WE end up paying both federal and state every year...
47%...
We’re quickly getting to the point where no matter what those of us who love America do, we will will not save this country, peacefully.
I’d like to see a national sales tax (5%) instead of an income tax.
...upside down tax ratios are already the norm in Baltimore...only 30% of the population pays taxes there...I expect that Newark/Detroit/Richmond/New Orleans are upside down too.
1.bring back the literacy test
2.bring back poll tax
3.eliminate motor voter
That requirement should be reinstated.
Representation without taxation...
me too.
