Look at that lady to his left. She’s clapping.
That is a truly iconic photograph, originally published in Life Magazine, and now part of the National Archives. I never quite knew what to make of the woman who appears to be clapping. Was she merely trying to hide her rage or fear by appearing outwardly supportive? Or was she one of those who wound up with torn clothing and a shaven head after the Allies marched back through the Arc de Triomphe in 1944?
