PARIS - France's government changed its tone on Wednesday on the arrest of Roman Polanski for having sex with a 13-year-old girl, describing the charges as serious after initially rushing to the film director's defense....After French politicians across the spectrum initially voiced strong unease over the arrest, a government spokesman modified the official line on Wednesday, saying that Polanski was "neither above nor below the law..."

France's political and artistic elite defended him, with Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand accusing the United States of showing a frightening face by seeking his extradition. Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said he had written to Clinton...

Several French politicians, including members of President Nicolas Sarkozy's own UMP party, have accused the government of elitism and acting in haste. Green Member of the European Parliament Daniel Cohn-Bendit said Mitterrand should have waited before more details of the case were known. Extreme right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen denounced a "political-artistic caste" claiming special privileges.

"Charges of raping a 13-year-old child, that's not something trivial," UMP parliamentarian Marc Laffineur said.

Poland has also changed its tone, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk urging moderation.

“France’s political and artistic elite defended him...”

...because committing statutory rape is perfectly okay as long as you’re famous?

What am I missing here?

You’re not famous.

PS - Roman Polanski is a pervert and his movies suck.

Calling him an “artist” is like calling an apprentice carpenter an architect.

Was there any word on what the French people said? Did some of the cultural elite realize that they can only keep their positions of luxury if the don't p*** off the masses, and defending a scum bag who drugs and anally rapes a child isn't the way to keep the people's support.

Do you really think that Reuters cares or gives a s**t what normal, non-celebrity people think in France? I am confident they are as outraged as we are. But they, like we, don’t count.

I don't think Reuters cares, but I wonder if the French elite are getting more than expected push-back from the people. Unless they are setting cars on fire in the Paris streets, I would expect the first way they find out is with a poll.

The leftists all jumped up to defend this demon, because he's an artiste and a celebrity. It was an emperor's new clothes moment, where they all tripped over each other to appear worldly and non-judgemental and hip to the arts.

This morning, they all woke up and realized they were going out on a limb for a guy who drugged a little girl so he could anally rape her.

That's a stupid limb to find yourself on, and everybody's inching back towards the tree.

How many people realize that “worldly” and “worldly wise” simply means “doing Satan’s bidding”?

Agreed. This wasn't statutory rape. Statutory rape is sex that would have otherwise have been considered consensual, except that the sexual partner is too young to give legal consent to the sexual act.

In this case, according to her Grand Jury testimony, the 13-year old said "no."

She said "no" to the oral sex Polanski forced on her, she repeatedly said "no" to the vaginal sex Polanski forced on her, and she repeatedly said "no" to the anal sex Polanski forced on her.

It was rape.

Nothing merely statutory about this.

Thank you for the correction. I was 12 years old when he committed the crime. All I really knew about him at that time was that his pregnant wife had been murdered by the Manson family in 1969 and then he did something to a 13 year old girl and fled the country. It wasn’t until much later that I found out his movies suck (after watching one or two).

With that said, I think the French and the “artistic elite” consider even full on rape acceptable so long as the perpetrator is famous or an “artist”.

This was not just statutory rape.

The child was drugged and still was unwilling even then.

The French are only weakening in their defense of Polanski because he raped a little girl. Had the victim been a boy they would commit fully.

After reading this, I don't see how anyone could defend him.
