The Chicago Olympics: Another view (Why I oppose it).
American Thinker ^ | 9/30/2009 | Rick Moran

Posted on 09/30/2009 9:47:01 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

AT Political Correspondent Rich Baehr has an excellent article today on why he supports President Obama's efforts to bring the 2016 Olympic games to Chicago.

However, I disagree with my distinguished colleague and associate myself with this devastating piece in the New York Post by Michelle Malkin:

"Bringing the games to the Windy City is Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley's "vision." The entrenched Democratic powerbroker -- in office since 1989 -- would like to cap off his tenure with a glorious $4 billion bread-and-circuses production. The influential Daley machine backed Barack Obama in the presidential primaries. Obama lavished praise on Daley's stewardship of the city. Longtime Daley cronies helped pave Obama's path to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Now, they're returning the favor for their hometown boss.

Senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, a Daley loyalist, served as vice chair of Chicago's 2016 Summer Olympics bid committee before moving to the White House, where she has helmed a new "White House Office on Olympic, Paralympic and Youth Sport" with an undisclosed budget and staff.

It's not just Chicago taxpayers who should be worried about this field of schemes. Crain's Chicago Business reports that Jarrett and Chicago 2016 committee member Lori Healey met this month with federal officials at the Department of Housing and Urban Development "to discuss financing options" for the estimated $1 billion Olympic Village.

The door is open, and the administration is "willing to meet and listen" to any federal subsidy proposals, Jarrett said. Hey, what happened to Obama's tough rules on interest-conflicted lobbying by his administration officials?"

Malkin goes on to detail just who is pushing the idea for the Chicago Olympics - Obama cronies who stand to make a fortune from all the venues and infrastructure that would be built - and explains why Obama is jetting off to Copenhagen tomorrow to try and sell the International Olympic Committee on Chicago.

I think Rich makes a reasonable case for his side but the thought of all that money that will disappear into the pockets of Daley cronies and other friends of the machine makes me ill.

Let Rio have the games. Great party town.

it would be interesting to see the entire world come to Chicago to get mugged, murdered, and shot at.

I hear all kinds of horror stories from one of my sons who drives truck through Chicago once in a while, although he tries avoid loads going there.

The Munich Olympics was the worldwide comming out party for a new political movement in Europe.

The 2016 Olympics will be held during the last year of Obama’s second term (should he be reelected.) Should he be reelected, I expect a pretty stong push to remove presidential term limits (shades of Honduras.)

A 2016 Olympics in Obama’s home town of Chicago would make a fitting comming out party also.

The parallels are starting to get eerie.

Anything that benefits the generations-old corrupt machine of Chicago I'm against.

Will the Olympics bring money or become a financial albatross to Chicago that tax payers will have to shoulder for generations ?

Let me think..... 3 guesses and the first 2 don't count.

Should be kind of exciting-I heard the final decathalon event for the Chicago Olympic Games was to have the athletes don Confederate flag t-shirts and have them run down this street......Last one alive wins

Given how completely miserable Chicago weather is during the Summer Games time window I think it’ll be great, people in outdoors events will be passing out left and right. Heck people in indoor event might be passing out.

Didn’t Hitler use the Munich Games to further his political career? Why yes, I believe he did.

History is replete with examples of why one does not want to be a Dictator. The retirement plan sucks.

All of the shooting competitions have to be held outside of Chicago anyway.

All the guns are illegal there.

I could be wrong and believe me, I have A LOT of mixed feelings about Chicago getting the Olympics. As I had said in other threads, Toyko and Madrid are pretty much out of the running, the former, Bejjing had the games last year, the later, London will hold the 2012 games. It is going to be either Chicago or Rio. I do Rio credit for presenting a good case to have the games,(first city in South America,Pele) to name a few. Chicago, also boasts, like it or not, the first black person to be President and also where another famous legend, Micheal Jordan played for the Bulls. BTW, Jordan is in the Basketball Hall Of Fame In Springfield, MA.

The 1936 games were held in Berlin. Remember how Hitler walked out when Jesse Owens helped to disprove his theory that the Arian race was superior by winning 4 Gold medals ?

I’m sure this has already been brought up, but I heard just a snippet of Beck yesterday saying that the site for the Olympics in Chicago is owned/leased/controlled (not sure which) by Valerie Jarrett. She has been best buddies with Obama since -— well, forever! After the Olympics builds there, she stands to gain a boatload of $’s for the capital improvements that will remain behind. Is that another reason Obama is going all out to get the Olympics in Chicago?
