The only way to deter Iran's quest for regional dominance should diplomacy fail is the threat of force. Mr. Gates essentially took that off the table when he told CNN that "there is no military option that does anything more than buy time." If Tehran does not think diplomacy is backed by the threat of force, there is no credible way to make the nation reconsider its ambitions.

Well hey, the Lord is going to return someday so why bother defending any earthly territory in the meantime.
This is silly. Slowing down an enemy is almost always worthwhile.

With Iran, Gates insisted: “there is no military option that does anything more than buy time.”. Simple honesty should have required that he add that “there is no non-military option that does anything more than waste time.”

That’s no failure: Obama seeks power for ALL Moslem states. It’s the U.S. he’s seeking to trim.

Iran seeks nuclear bombs, not talks.

Obama and the Europeans could unite to topple the Iranian regime without direct military action. They could declare the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad illegitimate by reason of election fraud and give diplomatic and material support to the opposition. A worldwide information campaign could be mounted highlighting government atrocities, corruption and support for global terrorism. When Ahmadinejad and the mullahs are run out of office negotiations could begin with the new government on nuclear weapons. Sadly, the “good guys” are just as corrupt as the bad guys so any initiative along these lines will be halfhearted and sabotaged at every stage.
