A TSUNAMI WATCH IS ISSUED FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII EFFECTIVE AT 0805 AM HST.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0748 AM HST 29 SEP 2009 COORDINATES - 15.3 SOUTH 171.0 WEST LOCATION - SAMOA ISLANDS REGION MAGNITUDE - 7.9 MOMENT

EVALUATION

BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA A TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN GENERATED BY THIS EARTHQUAKE THAT COULD BE DESTRUCTIVE ON COASTAL AREAS EVEN FAR FROM THE EPICENTER. AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII.

Shep on FNC (so take it for what it’s worth) is reporting 8.3 magnitude initial shock, 7.9 and 5.6 aftershocks...

FNC is reporting ‘minimal damage’ on Samoa, however the Samoan delegate to Congress phoned in and said his sources (constituents) are telling him ‘major damage’....

I have friends who were in the harbor on their sailboat at Phuket when the tsunami started pulling all the water out. They didn’t know what was going on, but they hauled anchor and got out of there fast, and kept heading out to sea. They didn’t know what had happened until they returned and saw the devastation. They didn’t feel the tsunami itself, just the freaky currents that whipped the boat around 180 degrees in a couple of seconds.
