Revenue dropped despite a controversial decision by Patrick and the Legislature to increase taxes by more than $1 billion, including boosting the state sales tax from 5 percent to 6.25 percent. Retailers warned that the state would not raise nearly as much as estimated, predicting that customers would go to New Hampshire or the Internet to avoid additional taxes.

But, but, but I thought the new taxes were going to make up for everything?
New Hampshire's loving this!

“most budget slashing” assumes there has really been “budget slashing” already. There really has not been any real “budget slashing” yet. AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM!!

As someone recently wrote (paraphrased)
being liberal means you think you can dip buckets of water out of the deep end of the pool, dump it into the shallow end of the pool, and thereby increase the amount of water in the pool.

Or shopping in NH and the internet.
Also, don’t forget the lost sales of people from RI, CT, VT and NY who shopped in MA to save on taxes.
No spending has been cut. No fiscal sanity has taken over. It’s the same ole same ole.

The liberal solution; raise taxes to 10%, then 20%, 30%... Still not working? Confiscate savings.
The parasites are now killing the host.

New England used to be such a hardy and strong part of the US.
Before we were a country, New England contributed the lion’s share of volunteers to fight the French and Indians in the 1750s and 1760s.
Now, the only thing New Englanders fight over are lottery tickets...and donuts.
I left MA in 1977 and never regretted it for a moment.

At the state level and the public sector, we still have enormous challenges ahead of us, Patrick said yesterday afternoon, pointing to signs of an uptick in the economy. But we are confident that were on the right course, that were pointed in the right direction, that better times are ahead. ain't no "uptick". the uptick is only less of a downtick. it's time for honesty and real leadership.

You didn’t raise taxes ENOUGH, Dee-val, you silly boy.
Raise them more! Seriously. Pay NO attention to observed results! Facts are for conservatives — you don’t need ‘em!
Go with your ‘Rat “feelings” instead. You can’t lose.

No way. I looked into moving to New York after a job offer. As bad as taxes our here we have nothing on New York. Property taxes alone were double what I pay here in Mass.
