Poster Of President Obama Causing Controversy in Richmond

RICHMOND - A sign depicting President Barack Obama in the image of the joker from Batman is causing a stir.

The large sign hangs outside Club Velvet in Shockoe Bottom and many in the community are reacting to it. And some are even asking the owner of the club to take it down.

Thirteen year old Jamilia Cunningham is one of them. She says when she saw the banner she was left speechless and that the image is disrespectful to a man who has made history.

"I wanted to be the first African American President and I am happy that I didn't have to wait that long to get one," said Cunningham.

She put her feelings about the banner in a letter that she wrote to Club Velvet's Owner Sam Moore. In it she told him that the sign was hurtful and asked him to take it down. Moore declined to talk with Cunningham but did release a statement about why he put the banner up. He said his display is not intended to make a racial statement but rather to express his displeasure with the Obama administration.

"This country is going to hell in a hand bag and the current administration is making things irreversibly worse," said Moore.

Some local residents say the banner is making a statement to all who pass by...and not necessarily a good one.

"I'm a little offended. It's not in good taste," said neighbor Al Hughes.

Others in the community pointed out that what is distasteful in this case isn't illegal.

The usual suspects are unhappy that the "first African American President" is being portrayed this way.

Bad taste can take a back seat you morons. I don’t care how proud you are he has more pigment in his skin than someone else.

"I wanted to be the first African American President and I am happy that I didn't have to wait that long to get one," said Cunningham.

Ms. Cunningham, your infatuation with Mr. Obama is naive. When you better understand the deeper politial realities involved -- such as the fact that you'll be paying for this administration's staggering spending spree, to give just one example -- you may just think differently about him.

Nope, never had any divisive signs out in public before. Especially from 2000 to 2008.

If Obama has lost the guy that owns the neighborhood “Gentleman’s Club”, then it’s very, very bad news for him

Wait till 13 year old Jamilia finds out he wants her to go to school more hours each day, and more days per year. She’s gonna have a fit when she can’t “chill” with her friends....

Exactly, You want to occupy the most powerful office in the world you better be prepared to have people disagree with you. This isn't Cuba (yet) and we are allowed to disagree with our politicians. This a$$-clown in the WH hasn't had 1/10th the abuse GW Bush took over the years. I'm sick at the same people who told us dissent is patriotic when Bush was in office, now lecturing us about disrespecting the president.

Troops are being slaughtered in Afghanistan and he needs to consider whether to send in more troops, but we need to remake health care yesterday. This idiot is lucky he's getting as little criticism as he is.

"first African American President"

Sorry to disappoint the little libtard, but Andrew Jackson beat Zero for that distinction by just a few centuries.

If the NEA teachers would teach proper History, this would not be such an "historic" presidency for what his race is but rather, what his policies are doing to the country as a whole.....

Is that idiot from the Robert E. Lee mural controversy a while back still on Richmond City Council? I don’t remember the guy’s name, but IIRC his inflammatory statements about the Lee picture hanging on the floodwall end up inciting a couple “yutes” to deface and burn the thing.
