Photo of Obama and Spain's First Children Causes a Stir September 25, 2009 04:53 PM ET | Paul Bedard, Alex Kingsbury | Permanent Link | Print

Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was in for a rude shock if he thought the same privacy conventions that shield the children of public figures in his home country would extend to the United States. Zapatero brought his wife and two daughters along on his trip to New York for the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly, and on Wednesday he and his family posed for a photograph with President Obama at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The photo caused a huge stir in Spain because the public had never before seen an image of its leader's children, ages 13 and 16, who appeared in the photograph sporting slightly gothic attire.
The photo, credited in the Spanish press to White House photog Lawrence Jackson, was posted on the State Department Flickr site, according to sources. Conservative news outlets in Spain prominently featured the photograph of the Socialist leader's familywith the faces slightly pixilated to comply with the country's aforementioned privacy laws concerning minorsin their papers and on their websites. The conservative El Mundo newspaper put the photograph on Page A1. The liberal El Pais, meanwhile, ran a detailed explainer about why it was not publishing the offending image.
After a request by the Spanish government, the White House removed the photograph from the State Department website. But it was too late. Many Spanish in-boxes today were flooded with a series of E-mails with the photographobviously altereddepicting the two teens as members of the Addams Family, the band KISS , and J. R. R. Tolkien's troll-like Orcs.
I have to admit, there are some extremely creative people on this thread. Since the administration is funding “the artists”, I’m sure mojo could apply for a grant to continue the great art on this thread.
Tis not I, but the creative juices of the FReepers. I’ll take the thanks anyway. ;P
While that would be nice. There are worse things. Clingy, revealing things come to mind. :)
But don't worry Dad, you'll get over it either way.
My daughters were both pretty conservative dressers, especially the "over endowed" one who is now a lawyer, and mother of 3, the younger two are identical twins. She's still over endowed, or at least she thinks so.
Other daughter almost always dresses pretty casually, although she looked very feminine indeed, at the wedding were she married that German speaking, "Black Irish", guy from Abilene. The first one? Well she married another lawyer... from New Jersey.
Goth you can live through.. as long as it's just a "look", and less so an "attitude".
Actually I get along just fine with both of sons-in-law, for which I do indeed thank God.
OTOH, maybe I'm just easy. I also get along very well indeed with my Mother-in-law, as I did with my Father-in-Law, who is now deceased, and with his parents, also long deceased, and long missed too.
Wasn’t it “League of Their Own” that had the gal going through etiquette class? That’s what this reminds me of.
The big/little guy?
It was VERY quick, about half the folks in the theater caught it.
I only saw that movie once. I wish that I had remembered. We had to sit and walk with books on our heads.
LOL.....ha ha ha ha
gosh, barry has so many superpowers to choose from. ;P)
I like the Spanish privacy/shielding of politicians’ kids. I’d be happy if they shielded the Obama girls and had done the same with the Bush twins, Chelsea Clinton, etc.
We may not think much of the goth look but at least at 13 and 16 they are doing and wearing what they want without having to project an image of whatever the media and public wants the ‘first children’ to look or dress like.
And, yes, Michelle’s dress is not attractive. The color doesn’t do a thing for her, but the style doesn’t look that bad .. at least no boob belts.
This thread is a great way to end the weekend. I almost forgot I have to get up for work.
The giant in Harry Potter.
( . . . she makes all the Reverend Mothers I know look absolutely wholesome by comparison . . . )
Maybe crop the length of their dresses? Take off the boots. Replace with stylish pumps. Airbrush the jewelry, any piercings, tats, etc.
Man, I almost forgot about that song. I saw the Milkmen twice back in the day, their live shows were quite an experience!
The really, big dude with a lot of hair and beard?
Dang that was a good movie!
Well, the fact that she is so off-putting just makes the famous Bene Gesserit knack for seduction that much more impressive!
He might as well have a sign around his neck reading "YANKEE".
