Obama Wants More School, Less Vacation
NBC Miami ^ | Sun, Sep 27, 2009 | Natalie Rix

President Obama wants kids to spend more time in school. Students in the U.S. need more class time to remain competitive with students around the world, the President said. Obama advocates schools adding time to classes, extending hours into evenings and weekends, and shortening summer vacation.

"Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas, not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom," Obama said.

Some schools that extended their hours have seen positive results. Early results from Massachusetts' expanded learning time initiative, which adds extra time to the school year, show that some students involved in the program do better on state tests than those at regular public schools.

The first I heard about the need for a longer school year, believe it or not, was 1949! I was in third grade, figured it was imminent.
Heard the same suggestion every year since.

The individual states and municipalities should make such decisions. Obviously, the Feds want to take control with the fed dollars.

The more school control leaves the community, the poorer the education.

This must not happen.

And no Fall/Winter/Spring long cold/flu that some how seem to coincide with school starting.

I wonder if such idea would have to be proposed in a bill and voted on by congress.

Reason I ask is if I were a parent of a school aged child and after the Obamacare scare what if something was written in the bill that if students did not show improvement or some such thing then the kid would be able to go Live at a special super duper school.

Imagine the indocternation that could take place then.

(if brain washing the kiddies to the objective of 0 and his minions).

another attempt to do it the "european way"...I think they go like 11-1/2 months out of the year.

Is it just me, or does it seem that the Kenyan is just changing stuff for the sake of changing them...what an immature brat.

All I here around our state is how education has to be cut to bare bones to meet budget cuts.

So how does 0 intend to pay for more school time without raising taxes?

More time to indoctrinate them in the I of the 0. Another unfunded mandate from the “Wants more of the Grand Meeeeee.......”
Students will probably require additional school time after he is gone to deprogram them.

You figured out the plan.

Can you imagine what kind of summer ‘lesson plans’ these freaks have in mind?

Down here in Texas, summer school is called by a variety of names: football camp, cheerleader camp, band camp, etc.

It won't happen here in the Lone Star state. We care too much about tradition, and Friday Night Lights.

Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas
(Yeah your Mom getting you up as a child at 4am worked wonders)

not with Malia and Sasha,
(why not they get a cool Limo ride to and from School and come home to a 5 star dinner ever night, not to the average family dinner)
not in my family, probably not in yours. Overall he is trying to be funny again in his approach
But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom," Obama said. And Obama said so it must be so!

Summer? What about the teachers days, every presidents birthday, all the Holidays, 2 weeks for Spring, 2 weeks for Christmas, and half days and snow days ...they hardly go to school anymore!

Someone expresses that they want more education for kids and it happens to agree with what Hussein said, and you tell him to go to DU? A bit harsh to say the least.

He wants them to babysit. That’s the bottom line. That and to keep them longer to indoctrinate them more. Make sure the parents have less time with them. FUBO!!!!

Why is this an issue for the president anyway? I thought these dates were set by state and local officials. The federal government has too much say in education and shouldn’t get any more, IMO.

I just find it quite sad that the president gets the blame or praise for what happens to the education system in any case. Too many Americans just naturally assume they have to look to the federal government on issues that should be settled by states and municipalities so it is no wonder dependence on government has grown.
